Show life B4 TUESDAY • FEBRUARY 20 • 2007 Local music review Local hip-hop on the rise Sounding good while having fun Erik Fredericks Life Writer On Feb. 2 at Provo's Hollywood Juice, a talented bunch of local hiphop acts put their skill on display. All sorts of skills were shining from beatboxing and DJs, to rapping and a live band. When you think of local hip-hop, you may have heard of the Numbs or The Agents; they have been consistently "on poin'" since the mid-90s. Lately there has been more and more eager crowds wanting to be heard and on Feb. 2, they did it for free. All they asked in return was for people to come and support local hip-hop. Up-and-coming DJs, The Crate Dwellers, mixed and matched records nicely throughout the entire night. They were spinning for themselves and also for different acts throughout the show. They kept the night moving. A "hip-hopper" named Rapid put some precise beat-box skills on display, and Flow Everest from the popular group. The Agents, also performed some of his tracks. Flow Everest was the most polished of the acts that were on the billing that night. UVSC student Shawn Curran, whose stage name is "Definite," was on stage for a good majority of the night performing his songs and songs with other acts as well. He did songs with Mike Moore and Ike Rush from the group Hallways. The highlight of the night was when the band Wreck Room played some of Definite's songs live. Shane Curran played bass for Wreck Room and he hit every note during the performance. The songs they were playing were all produced by Definite and most were off of his last CD, HEARING FOR THE DEF. When Wreck Room was rocking out with some hip-hop tracks, it was lively and it added a whole new feel to the show. They were definitely energetic and entertaining. More shows are sure to come. Local hip-hop is worth your time, and the performers are only getting better. It is lots of kids that are working, going to school, or both, that just love hip-hop. Not only is it fun for them, they're good at it. So, keep your eyes open for the next hiphop show and come support local hip hop.
