Show Last Friday night, a girl aged 15, who resides on the Island, attended a ball in Logan Hall. Shortly before the dance closed a young man (whose name for the present is not given), so she says, asked to see her home. She refused his company. When the dance was over, and as she was walking home, he came up to her, having evidently been waiting for her. He offered his arm but she refused to take it. He then attempted to take hers but she resisted. He kept along with her, however, and made indecent proposals to her. She resented his overtures, when he caught hold of her, crowded her up against a fence, inflicting some bruises upon her, and attempted, though unsuccessfully, to accomplish his diabolical purpose. She made a stout resistance and struck him in the face, making his nose bleed. At length freeing herself she made her way home. Next day, by the advice of friends, she made affidavit before the police magistrate, charging the defendant with assault with intent to rape. A warrant was issued, and the next morning (Sunday) the defendant was lodged in jail. Yesterday he was arraigned, but waived an examination. His bonds were placed at $500. We have given the version of the affair as related by the prosecutrix. The two were entirely alone, and in a lonely place, and at a lonely hour. It is one of those cases where the facts as stated by either party are difficult to verify. The defendant admits having made indecent proposals, but denies that he used force. |
