Show Do not be troubled because you have no great virtues. God made a million spires of grass where He made one tree. The earth is fringed and carpeted, not with forests, but grass. Only have enough of little virtues and common ??, and you need not mourn because you are neither a saint nor a hero. As the Dead Sea drinks in the river Jordan, and is never the sweeter, and the ocean all other rivers, and is never the fresher, so we are apt to receive daily mercies from God and still remain insensible to them-unthankful for them. I have found nothing yet which requires more courage and independence than to rise even a little but decidedly above the par of the religious world around us. Surely, the way in which we commonly go on is not the way of self-denial and sacrifice and cross-bearing which the New Testament talks of.-Dr. J. w. Alexander. A firm faith is the best divinity, a good life is the best philosophy; a clear conscience is the best law; honesty is the best policy, and temperance the best physic. |
