May 1988 San Rafael Swell is unique in the world Situated mostly in Emery County, the San Rafael Swell is a geological phenomenon unique in the world. Eons ago, the earths crust burst open and molten magma bubbled out, forming a huge dome of rock, ringed with upthrust sandstone anticlines. The Swell once was home to the Fremont culture and remains of their rock art can be found throughout the region. It was also home to old precious metal miners who dug out ore and eventually left behind the mines and shacks near them. A Bureau of Land Management campground is found near a suspension bridge across the San Rafael River, which makes a great base camp for exploring the Swell. The campground is at the mouth of Buckhorn Wash on a good road which can be reached easily in available at the Tourist Council office in the Price Municipal Building and detailed maps of the region can be purchased at the BLM office, also in Price. Parts of the San Rafael Swell are now national wilderness study areas and many believe much of the land will eventually be preserved as wilderness. Some in the country are even advocating the entire region being designated as a national monument.
