Show SPRINGVILLE'S OPPORTUNITY j With the awakening of spring, art lovers of Utah each year are given a genuine thrill in one of the most pretentious art exhibitions to be seen in all America. Springville has the honor on these accasions of enacting the role of hostess to thousands thous-ands who come from near and far and view with ecstacy the works of the masters that adorn the walls of the Springville High School auditorium. -t 1 In this project Springville is given its greatest medium of publicity; its greatest niltiiral training and its highest appraisal in the eyes of the world. We know of no dty in the intergmountain territory that has the nucleus of a project with greater possibilities than that of the Springville annual art show. It takes time to build any worthwhile institution, and that is exactly what we must make out of our art exhibit-an institution in every sense of the word-one whose influence will be felt throughout the length and breadth of the land. That may sound excessively pretentious for a city the size of Springyille, but smaller towns than ours have gained world renown in projects that at their beginning begin-ning apparently had fewer 1 possibilities than our art show has at this time. We have in mind, for instance, the Passion Play that has made famous the little village of Ober-Ammergau in Bavaria. This institution had its beginning many, many years ago under quaint circumstances. But despite the remoteness of Ober-Ammerglu Ober-Ammerglu mllions of people from all corners of the earth have made their way ofTen at serious personal inconvenience, u? the steep mountains tof Tyro to see .this wonderful performance. Many other instances ot the development of institutions under adverse conditions and circumstances might be cited. So we see a great future fu-ture in our art show. . Citizens of Springville must lend their support to the movement. Their outlot-town outlot-town friends should be invited to come to Springville while the -.exhibition is on Invitations to groups, to educational institutions and artists of note should be KdcXa!ndThePnhev come they must be received with hospitality and enter-tained enter-tained to the best of our ability. If these things are done nothing can prevent Springville's annual art show from developing into an institution of national repute. |
