Show TO EXCAVATE PREHISTORIC UTAH BONES Permission to excavate the bones of prehistoric animals which have been found in a quarry at the Jordan Jor-dan Narrows has recently been granted the University of Utah. The work of recovering the ancient fossils was placed under the direction direc-tion of Prof. A. L. Matthews of the geology department of the university. univer-sity. The quarry in which the bones were found belongs to W. S. Evans of Lehi, Utah. It lies nt the southern extremity of Salt Lake valley. The discovery of these fossils will throw new light on the prehistoric life of Utah. It is thought that the hones are the remains of camels, horses and rhinoceroses. Professor Mathews says that the bones were found in a bedded deposit de-posit of pure limestone, containing as high as 98 per cent calcium cor-bonnte cor-bonnte that apparently had been derived de-rived from a thermal spring. The conclusion has been reached that the fossils are the bones or niamals hat lived on this continent during the Cenozic age a long time before the glacial epoch or the formation of Lake Bountiful. The university has been given freedom to excavate any of the other interesting fossils in the Jordan Narrows quarry that otherwise is worked for its limestone lime-stone which is used in the sugar beet Industry. |
