This will happen in the parking lot of the Benjamin Church. Children are invited to come in costumes and adults who wish to join in the fun are asked to park their vehicles and to dispense their Halloween goodies from the trunks of their cars or beds of trucks. The Activities Committees of both wards will be sponsoring this event and will be dispensing refreshments. ••• As a special summer project that Boy Scout Troop 98 (Benjamin 1st Ward) undertook was that of a Scout Garden. Scoutmaster Clay Foy donated an area of his property for the summer's garden spot. Periodically through the summer, produce was made available free to those who desired some fresh vegetables. The scouts raised a bumper crop of winter squash which they displayed at the recent Frost Fair. If anyone would still like some, call Clay Foy to check on any squash still available. Thanks to the boys and leaders for an excellent project. The hullabaloo about swine flu There and Back Again Shirlene R. Oitesen All the talk lately is about the Swine Flu — or as it is referred to as the H1N1 Virus. Remember, it has little to do with pork so you can still eat pork chops, ribs, bacon, ham -^ all that good stuff. We are being reminded about the precautions we need to take to hopefully escape getting it; the symptoms of this flu and what to do if we are suddenly a caregiver to someone in our family who has it. Because it is so contagious, I just don't see how many of us will escape it. It's not just on the handles of the cart at the grocery store or the door knob at the church or post office. A neighbor of mine, who is a nurse says that the virus is in the air. Well, we can't stop breathing, so what do we do? We just do all we can and hope for the best. Our Relief Society president recently handed out a paper from the Red Cross with some very good information in it and I would like to share some of it with you. I found the information on preventing dehydration helpful. It states: dehydration occurs when the body loses too much water and it's not replaced quickly enough. It can be serious. Begin giving soothing drinks at the first signs of the flu and follow these tips: In addition to plenty of liquids, give ice and light, easily digested foods such as soup or broth. If your loved one has diarrhea or vomiting, give fluids that contain electrolytes. These are-available at your pharmacy or grocery store. Or you can make your own rehydration electrolyte drink for someone over the age of 12, Electrolyte Drink: 1 quart water 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp table salt 3 to 4 tbsp. Sugar 1/4 tsp salt substitute Mix well and flavor with lemon juice or sugar-free Kool-Aid. If drinking liquids makes nausea worse, give one sip at a time until your loved one can drink again. When a household member is sick, follow this advice: The flu virus is spread when contaminated droplets exit the mouth and nose of an infected person and the virus comes in contact with others. Follow these tips to protect yourself and others in your home: Keep everyone's personal items separate. All household members should avoid sharing computers, pens, papers, clothes, towels, sheets, blankets, food or eating utensils. Disinfect door knobs, switches, handles, toys and other surfaces that are commonly touched. When preparing for a flu pandemic, take this advice: Make a plan now for a pandemic. Figure out what you will do if members of your household have to stay home from work or school or stay separated from others for a period of time. Keep extra supplies of food, water, medications and your disaster supply kit on hand. Some caregiving supplies to have on hand would be a thermometer, soap, disposable gloves, acetaminophen , ibuprophen, bleach, alcohol-based sanitizer, paper towels, tissues, sugar, backing soda, salt and salt substitute. To help reduce fever, do the following: Give plenty of liquids, give fever reducing medicine such as acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen, as directed by the label on the container. Do not give aspirin to anyone younger that 20. Keep a record of the patient's temperature. To relieve discomfort, give a sponge bath with lukewarm water. If you have any questions, contact the Red Cross, your health care professional or local health department for more information. The next question is to vaccinate or not to vaccinate. I must admit I have some reservations. I haven't decided yet. There's no doubt that it's here. I just hope that any precautions we do take will help and that we can successfully ride this one out. Srtofcr AM-CMOO From CAUCUS • A2 were originally intended to do/' My colleagues and I represented The Patrick Henry Caucus at the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) convention, a national legislative conference held in Atlanta this past July. To date, 35 states have followed Utah's lead. We will present several pieces of legislation during the 2010 General Session. Rep. Wimmer has appeared twice on the Glen Beck Show to discuss the caucus. I believe the Patrick Henry Caucus can and will make a positive difference in the fight for . states1 rights. What can I do? • Learn more about the caucus at www.thepatrickhenrycaucus.org • If you support our efforts, sign up as a volunteer • Study our federal and state constitutions and understand what rights have been guaranteed to the states • Suggest specific areas where Utah can legally assert rights now claimed by the federal government Please feel free to contact me with comments or questions at mikemorley@utah.gov.
