Nielsen comes highly qualified and has numerous awards including Human Resource Developer of the Year Award by the Utah Association of Elementary School Principals in 2003. He also received the Rookie Principal of the Year Award by the Utah Association of Elementary School Principals. "Rick Nielsen is a strong and successful leader who has the desire and ability to develop strong educators. He has the amazing talent to foster relationships with people, and genuinely cares about students as well as teachers. Rick has the ability to make everyone feel valued and works to help them develop their individual talents through encouragement, and by providing development opportunities," said Dean Rowley, board president. Nebo School District's Superintendent Chris Sorensen said, "I am thrilled to continue my working relationship with Nielsen. In many ways this appointment change is more of a title change since the elementary director has been handling many of these duties for the last several years. I am equally excited for the new elementary director because the new director will be able to focus on elementary issues rather than some of these district-wide responsibilities. We will begin searching for another elementary director from within the district management team immediately and fill the position as soon as possible." Nielsen enjoys coaching soccer, baseball, and basketball as well as reading, golfing, and his many church responsibilities. He is the son of Clyde and Norma Nielsen of Spanish Fork and the son-inlaw of Denis and Christine Poulsen of Mapleton. Rick and his wife, Karen, reside in Spanish Fork with their five children. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 2008 • B3 Nebo District offices move Lindsay B. Wolsey STAFF WRITER When the Nebo School District building was built in 1977, the district had about 10,000 students. In 2008, the district is breaking close to 27,000 students, and is growing by approximately 1,000 students a year. Technology has also outpaced the district building, and this June the long-needed overhaul of the building has begun. During the year-long renovation process, the district offices have been transplanted into the District Learning Center in Springville. Known as the old Westside Elementary School, the most recent use of the building has been for trainings and teacher inservice meetings. "These offices are just temporary — we're moving here until the end of May next year," Nebo Public Relations Officer Lana Hiskey said. "It's been a pretty seamless transition," Hiskey said. "We had a big crew that helped everybody move, and we did it in stages so that each department moved on a different day." The Finance Department actually moved a month before everyone else because June is a very busy month for payroll. The Human Resources department doesn't mind being in temporary offices. "This has actually worked out very well for temporary offices. We actually have more square footage, and more space in our filing room," said Al Mosher, director of human resources. Mosher and Superintendent Chris Sorensen are the only Nebo employees who actually have their own offices. Everyone else is using classrooms that have been divided up with partitions. The Operations Department is occupying a portable trailer outside. "We are a little on top of each other," Hiskey said. "There are five people in my area. But we'll be fine — we can do anything temporarily. So far, the biggest adjustment is that the drinking fountains are a little low for adults." All of the phone numbers remain the same, and the address hasn't changed. Any mail sent to the Spanish Fork offices will be brought to the Springville offices by the Printing and Technology Departments, who are now occupying the old Landmark building. "It will be nice when our offices are done and we can move back," Mosher said. "I just hope it's after school lets out." Currently, construction is scheduled to be finished in May of 2009.
