Hughes prepares for Summer Games Chad Vest STAFF WRITER Mike Hughes has lived in or around Spanish Fork for almost all of his adult life, with the exception of the two years he spent in Argentina as an LDS missionary. In high school, Hughes ran cross country in the fall and excelled as a track athlete in the spring. In 1992, he and his teammates placed first in the cross country state championships to bring home a Mighty Don state title. As a senior in the spring of '93 Hughes anchored the 800 medley relay team which won a state title. Then, to top that off, he and his teammates competed in the 4x400 relay race and broke the state record while capturing yet another state title. After his church mission, Hughes attended UVSC and finished with a business management degree which undoubtedly assists him today as Nature Sunshine's Forecast Analyst. His main work responsibility is to plan which products need to be shipped to different international markets on a monthly basis. But aside from having a demanding job and a beautiful family of four, Hughes still has a love for track and field and the spirit of competition. At the end of 2006, he, like many former athletes, wanted to see if he still had it. He began running again to get in shape with plans to compete in the 2007 Summer Games held in Cedar City. "Last year ('07) was my first year doing it," said Hughes. "I thought it would be fun so I started training on my own to get ready. It was kind of hard because I was doing it by myself.
