Bain from the cloud is streaming, And the bow taenda overhead. The charm of the winter la brokenl The last of the spell is said: The eelln the pond Is quickening, The grayling leapt in tho stream; What if the clouds are thickening . foe bow the meadows gleam I The spell of the winter is shaken! The world awakes from a dream I The fir puts out green fingers, The pear tree softly blows. The rose In her dark bower lingers. But her curtains will soon unclose; The lilac will shake tier ringlets Otbt the blush of the roso. The swift Is wheeling and gleaming, The woods are beginning to ring, Rain from the cloud Is utreaming; There, where the bow doth cling, Summer Is smiling afar off, Over the shoulder of Spring ! Robert Buchanan. A Stepped Platform Railway. A novel idea has been evolved by two German engineers. Observing that even a fat man oau manf-g- o to mount a street car in motion, Messrs. Rettig propose to use as their rolling stock threecontinuous platforms moving along the streets side by side. The lowest of these platforms Is four inches high and moves at a uni-form speed of five feet per stcond. 'Any ordinary pedestrian can, they state, mount this platform from the ground without difficulty, and from this he can with equal ease step on to a second plat-form four inches higher than the first Md moving twice as fast. The passen-ger thus acquires a speed of ten feet per ' ..second, and stepping on to the third platform in the same way he is carried at a speed of fifteen feet per second, or ten miles an hour, to his destination, whore ho steps off in the inverse order, New York Commercial Advertiser. Ditgraclng a Great Name. George Hugo, the grandson of the poet, is a very poor representative of the illus-trious family to which he belongs. He is in appearance the heaviest dude in Paris and dresses most extravagantly. He never misses an opportunity to let people know who he is. A lady told me she was being served in a shop in the Avenue de l'Opera the other day, when Hugo came in and insisted on being at-tended to at once. The shopman de-murred, saying that ho had the lady to Attend to, whereupon the youth cried rut: "I suppose you do not know who I am. I am the grandson of Victor Hugo." t is a good thing that the old poet did pot live to see what the child about whom he wrote such feeling verses has devel-oped into. Paris Letter. Amutlng Children In Poor London children certainly enjoy much amusement and recreation which their parents never anticipated in their youth. The latest philanthropic idea is to give "Happy Evenings" to board nchool children, so as to teach tho littlo ones healthful play and keep them out o( the streets. This plan has been most successful in Lambeth, so now Mrs, Jeune, who has had so much experi-ence with the poor, has started the movement in Marylebone. The children go through a regular programme of amusements, dances alternating with familiar nursery games, tinder the super-intendence of the teachers and of vari-ous ladies and gentlemen who come to . i-v York Tolegratu, ; Paid to Rl(n. ' The vestry of Trinity Episcopal church, of Pittsburg, Pa., has agreed to pay the rector of the- parish, the Rev. Samuel . - Maxwell, if he will resign on June 1, and the offer has been accepted. This is probably the first instance on record where a congregation has paid its rector to resign and go elsewhero. Under the canons of the Episcopal church a rector cannot be discharged by a congregation, and can only be removed against his will from ministering over it after being tried and found guilty of conduct unbecoming a minister. Mr. Maxwell had the legal Tight of holding his position for life un-der this canon, St. Louis Globe-Democra-t. A Lawsuit Over a Hen. Two rather queer cases have been tried in a Columbus justice court. The first was a possessory warrant case, and the property involved was one hen. The ' contestants were negroos, and each em-ployed an attorney. After much wran-gling by the attorneys the magistrate made his decision. The defeated party is displeased with the result and will certiorari to the superior court The other case involves the title to a cooking stove. Much time and good temper were wasted over these two little matters. Savannah News. SaTed by BU Mltteni. Charlie Nutter, a son of Fred Nutter, of South Gardiner, came near drowning Saturday morning. He was attempting to cross tho ioo and walked Into the open water. His mit-tens, which were wet, froze to the ice when he clutched it to save himself from inldng, and kept him partially afiove the water until help arrived and ha was taken out. Kennebec Journal. Death of a Freak. A freak w ho died in Iowa a day or two ago had the body of a child, but a head as large as that of the ordinary man. He was 33 years old, and was never able to speak. For thirty year he was tied in a chair and fed with a spoon by his mother, whose con-stant fear was lest she should die before her boy and no one be loft to wait on '. him. Philadelphia Ledger. . Observers in many of the email cities blessed with shade trees have noticed that those trees near electric lights have been blighted by something, and, for the lack of Bonie more apparent cause, tho ' trouble is ascribed to the electric lights. The local arboriculturists saj that the trees need darkness as much as men need sleep.- - There seems to be some reason in supposing that the ne&rneeaof the . electric lights is the cause of the droop-ing of the trees, for similar trees, not ex-- , posed to any. other illumination titan that of the sun, have not been affected iq that way and are bright and strong.
