Show Democrats Name Committee To Pay Off Party Deficits Harry S. Truman, Eleanor , Roosevelt, Adlai Stevenson, Sen. Lyndon Johnson and Speaker Sam Rayburn are among the leading Democrats who joined in sponsoring a special committee commit-tee to wipe out the Democratic National Committee's $750,000 debt, it was announced by the National Committee. The group will carry on a 750 Club program authorized unanimously unani-mously at a recent meeting of the Democratic National Committee Com-mittee in Washington, D.C. Under Un-der the program, 750 Club members mem-bers will be sought to contribute or raise $1,000 each to go into a special fund to pay off the debt. Chairman of the national fund raising effort, named by the National Na-tional Committee, is former Under Un-der Secretary of the Treasury E. H. Foley of Washington, D.C. Mr. Truman, Mrs. Roosevelt and Mr. Stevenson will serve with him as honoray chairmen. Speaker Rayburn and Senator Johnson are members of a committee com-mittee which includes National Chairman Paul M. Butler, Vice Chairman Katie Louchheim and Treasurer Matthew H. McClos-key, McClos-key, in addition to nearly all living liv-ing former elected chairmen, Vice Chairmen and Treasurers of the National Committee, and other members of the Congress including Senator Estes Kefau-ver, Kefau-ver, Senator George Smathers of Florida, head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Com-ittee Com-ittee and Congressman Michael J. Kirvan of Ohio. Roger Stevens, Ste-vens, who headed the Stevenson-Kefauver Stevenson-Kefauver fund raising activities in 1956 will also serve on the committee. Chairman Foley has announced that all contributors of $1000 to the 750 Club will receive two tickets in a special 750 Club Section Sec-tion at the 1960 Democratic National Na-tional Convention as recognition for their assistance in paying off the debt. In addition, they will have the facilities of a private 750 Club Room at the convention for their use during the convention conven-tion time and they will also be assisted in hotel reservations and with their transportation while at the Convention. Mr. Foley also announced that plans were underway to set up a 750 Club organization in each of the states to assist in the nationwide na-tionwide campaign. He promised prom-ised further announcements on this phase of the program at an early date. Ralph R. Rose, Jr., seaman apprentice, ap-prentice, USN, son of Mrs. Jane M. Rose of 656 South 2nd West, is serving aboard the radar picket pick-et escort vessed USS Lowe, operating op-erating as part of the Continental Continen-tal Air Defense System, now stationed sta-tioned at Seattle, Wash. |
