The terrorists had originally demanded the release of a fellow member being held by French authorities in return for the safe release of the hostages. But after the prisoner was flown from France to the Netherlands, the guerillas refused to go through with the arrangement. Both French and Dutch officials were unable to explain the reasons behind the refusal. LOURENCO MARQUES, MOZAMBIQUE The collapse of a white settlers attempt to take over the government of Mozambique touched off racial riots which left over two hundred persons dead. The rioting began Tuesday, September 10th and reports of persons being stoned, stabbed, and beaten to death became commonplace. The white revolt was triggered by the signing of an agreement which transferred control of the Portuguese colony to Frelimo, a black guerilla movement which had battled with Portuguese forces for ten years. Mozambique is scheduled to receive its independence this June.
