Owlz Continued from Page 11 the first time in franchise history his-tory (37,'W). "Great Falls beat us 6-of-7 games this year and I think they probably looked at our record re-cord and said. -Weve got these guys at home.' " Kotchman said. "It just shows you that anything can happen when you get in the playoffs. The Owlz showed signs of potential during the season, but consistency had been a problem prob-lem all year and so had been losing one-run games. Orem never won more than three games in a row during the regular season, but finished the year winning five straight, four of those playoff games. And now the Owlz are the 2007 Pioneer League Champions. Champi-ons. "Our young pitchers got better bet-ter and they got better at the right time." Kotchman said. "It just proves pitching is the name of the game again." The 2007 team produced several players who developed into legitimate prospects who could be on track to play in the big leagues. Orem starting pitcher Jordan Jor-dan Walden may have the biggest big-gest up-side. He's just 20 years old. I lis fastball was clocked at 100 miles per hour and he averaged aver-aged 97 mph in his last start against Great Falls. Robert Fish, who pitched a complete game against Idaho Falls, also pitched his way to the players-to-watch list. Defensively, Kotchman believes shortstop Andrew Romine could play in the Major Leagues right now. He has the glove and arm to be a big-league infielder and also a decent bat. He hit for the cycle in a game against Ogden, and batted .286 for the year. Former University of Utah infielder Jay Brossman, who hit home runs in both championship cham-pionship games, finished the year hitting .349, third best in the league. He finished with seven home runs and came up clutch all year. Another player who came up big was Gordie Gronkows-ki, Gronkows-ki, who was hurt most of last season, but bounced back in a big way to hit .344, fourth best in the league, with eight home runs. Jeremy Moore led the team with 14 home runs and reliever Ryan Brasier finished the year with nine saves. "It's just fun seeing guys celebrate at the end of the year. Whether it's the college level or Little League, 99.9 percent of the teams end the year on a loss," Kotchman added. "It's nice to see these kids start off their professional profes-sional careers this way. Hopefully, Hope-fully, they take advantage of it and realize it doesn't happen hap-pen all the time." m lor icpUmfcf 21, Until ttpfmtor 2t, 2007 Pirates.;'.
