Show ORE M TIMES POE&TS Mm Janis the hero as Bruins beat Tigers in 20T Thursday, September 20, 2007 ME Neil K. Warner NORTH COUNTY Perhaps the best way to describe de-scribe what Mountain View's Auna Janis did Friday afternoon after-noon against Orem was to watch the reaction of a handful of Bruin fans after the game. "Auna Janis, Auna Janis, Auna Janis," several students chanted as they bowed down to her like she was royalty. That's what scoring the game-winning goal in the second sec-ond overtime will do for you when you beat your rival in a key Region 7 game. Three minutes into the second sec-ond overtime, Janis took the ball down the right side of the field and got a step on an Orem defender and scored the winning win-ning goal from 20 yards out that gave Mountain View a 2-1 win. "I just got a spurt of adrenaline adrena-line I guess. Our team was playing really hard, but I wasn't playing my best game so I just wanted it really bad," Janis said. "I saw the corner Timpanogos can't keep pace in loss to Lone Peak Russ Lyman NORTH COUNTY When you lose eight starters start-ers off of a team that reached the state championship game a year ago, there will always be plenty of questions marks surrounding sur-rounding your team. When one of your three returning re-turning starters is star forward Shantel Flanary, there will also be plenty of answers. In Lone Peak's 4-1 win over Timpanogos on Thursday afternoon after-noon in Orem, Flanary had all the answers as she exploded for four goals to lead the Knights to a big win that puts them in the driver's seat to win the Region Re-gion 4 title. Although the T'Wolves played hard for most of game, they simply couldn't convert on their scoring chances and made too many mistakes on defense. But most of all, they couldn't stop Flanary. The Utah State-bound striker struck first on a Lone Peak counter-attack. Our defense played awesome and our goal keeper, Aja (Domingo), she made some huge saves. We really hustled and finished our opportunities. I just think our team did awesome." The win helped Mountain View improve to 5-3-0 in region play, while Orem dropped to 5-1-1. "The girls really wanted it. We have a lot of seniors on the team and it's the last time we'll play against Orem," said Mountain View coach Sara At-uaia. At-uaia. "I was really proud of the way they played. They fought hard the whole game. They played a great defensive game. The only shot they (Orem) got was on a free kick, so they got nothing within the play of the game, so I was really proud of our defensive effort today." Orem won the first meeting between the two teams 2-0, but rewind dribbled around the keeper and easily tapped the ball home to put the Knights up 1-0. "I was pretty surprised to be able to get one," a modest Flanary said after the game. "I can't take all the credit because someone has to get the assist. It wasn't just me that stepped up but the whole team stepped up." Flanary did need some help on her second goal. Lora Kat-zenbach Kat-zenbach chased down a ball in the left corner of the field, ran around a defender and crossed the ball in front of the goal. As was the case throughout the game, Flanary was in the right place at the right time and one-timed one-timed the cross into the back of the net to give Lone Peak a 2-0 halftime lead. "I really thought we came out ready to play," said Lone Peak coach Mike La Hargoue. "The girls focused and started out re Bruce Henriksen, PLM : found the Bruins a tougher go the second time around. Mountain View's defense kept Orem scoreless in the first half as the Bruins took a 1-0 lead just five minutes before intermission. Mountain View's Anjie Lines Scored when she took a pass on the right angle, cut inside past an Orem defender and found the net to give the Bruins Bru-ins an early lead. It stayed that way until 23 minutes into the second half, when Orem's Kaitlyn Thomas had a free kick from 40 yards out. Domingo knew it was coming, but she couldn't do anything about it. Thomas came up with the perfect shot. She found the right corner of the net to tie the game. Neither team could break the tie in regulation, even though both teams had their chances. Orem's best chance came when a ball got past Domingo and Jaime Lyons was in position to make her pay, but her shot hit the side of the net. Mountain ally well." Timpanogos charged hard coming out of the break and earned several good chances before freshman forward Ma-rissa Ma-rissa Nimmer hit a volley out of the air, off Knight keeper Raven King, and into the net to make it a 2-1 game. The T'Wolves rally was short-lived. After a mis-hit header by a Timpanogos defender, de-fender, Flanary was there once again to capitalize. Her first shot was stopped by T'Wolves goalie Alexa Anderson, but Flanary Fla-nary followed her own shot and scored easily on the rebound to put Lone Peak up 3-1. With the game all but in hand, Flanary gave the Knight fans an encore late in the game with her most impressive goal. With a Timpanogos defender shadowing her, and with Anderson An-derson crashing toward the ball, Flanary intentionally overran over-ran the ball, changed direction, and knocked the ball home for her fourth goal and a 4-1 Lone Peak lead. "We had a couple of opportunities oppor-tunities that looked to be like good goal scoring opportunities opportuni-ties that we didn't capitalize on. I don't know if not having a game on Tuesday hurt. We thought that we were ready, but we came up flat today," said Orem coach Ed Louder. "Credit to Mountain View. They played a good game. They were physical, fast, and did the things that they needed to do to make themselves successful. suc-cessful. I thought we went away from our game and tried to play a kick-and-run game and that's not the way we play." "She's had that ability all year, but she hasn't necessarily done it quite like this," La Hargoue Har-goue said of Flanary. It's nice to see her have a statement-type statement-type game like this against one of the best teams in the state. Anybody can have a great game against a poor team, but to have a great game against a great team, that says a lot about who you are as a player." Flanary's huge day was complemented com-plemented by a solid defensive performance from goalie King, as well as from sweeper Kami Montgomery and defender Ca-rissa Ca-rissa Henly. Timpanogos had several chances to draw closer, the best of which was a Noelle Sanders shot that drilled the crossbar, but none o f the shots found the back of the net. "I'm real pleased to beat a quality team like Timpanogos," La Hargoue said. "The game was a lot closer clos-er than the score, but we just countered them.
