Show V OMEN DAY AT THE FAIR SPEAKERS AND CHOIR ENTER TAIN THOSE PRESENT fred J kiesel was mayor pro tem for the occasion george han son gives his views from mondays standard this is ogden day at portland and information from the fair city is that Ogden ites have been enjoying themselves the exercises were opened by short addresses by fred J klesel representing the mayor of ogden who was unable to be present the singers took part in the program and made an excellent impression the speaker of the occasion was col george M hanson who in the course of his remarks made a few pointed references to the mayor and enjoyed with humorous comparisons his speech is as follows mr chairman fellow citizens of ogden and the rest of the world we are honored today as never before in the history of the finest city in the land of alon jn having the privilege of celebrating the day selected tor glo the present promise and future greatness of our home town at a worlds exposition hundreds of miles away from the hearths and homes of ogden it is gratifying indeed that we have become so important it Is pleasant to contemplate that of the splendid cities of our state the first day of utah week is given to tho city that is to make the music for the irrigation congress and the fair the only city in our broad land that has tho honor of sending gold en voiced ladles and gentlemen to sing the harmonies of the west to the congregated hosts of all countries and here permit me to say that there is not a citizen of who does not feel a personal pride in the achievement of the ogden tabernacle choir and who does not wish for it a most pleasant and successful outing ogden with its many natural advantages resources and its network of railroads has been a foundation stone in the up building of our state it Is a hive of industry surrounded by beautiful homes and it is enjoying a steady and conservative growth the past three years have added wonderfully to its beauty arid attractiveness the public improvements have been ably planned and systematically carried forward under the direction of a public spirited administration the head of which Is ehfe mayor it is my pleasure hero say that in all the splendid forward movement of the city one of the main powers behind the throne has been and is the chairman who so modestly presides on this occasion the hon F J klesel deputy mayor it is to be regretted that the mayor himself with his shining top story could not be here today his absence however dims the glory only for himself for so as ha is not here to defend his own we shall pay homage to the new ruler alone bill pioneered his way down the columbia and through the fair with a squad of ten but fred came and saw and conquered with a company of two hundred it is no longer billtown Bill town but J of the mayor ican say he is a wonder and a puzzle ills resources are unlimited and the source of his power is a mystery unknown to the ordinary humble citizen from an unpretentious buffalo puncher on an island in the great salt lake ha was lured into ogden on the end of a fish book and in two years he most talked ot man in the state of utah he was nominated as a stroke of politics and his election was an alarming surprise his conduct in office has won the admiration mi ration of even his enemies and there are those who say he cant be kept out of a third term with a galling gun bill has again announced that he is out of politics and has trotted out others as likely candidates the careful student of ogden politics has observed that whenever bill trots out others for an office he wants it himself and though he puts away the crown with the back of his hand thus to my thinking he fain would have it bill is algo in the newspaper business and it is a notable fact that as editor he supports the mayor in all things so much tor the chief executive of whom we say that which pleases us because the worst he can do is to roast us in his papers but thon you know we can sue him for libel on a dozen counts and keep him busy retracting tor a month the deputy mayor Is different As a citizen his influence extends lo 10 all departments part ments of civil and public af fals ho says the choir shall go to portland and the choir goes ha tells the council to give the short line a street and the railroad gets it he says this Is a bad time to grant an interurban franchise and there Is no franchise granted in politics he is a democrat but he generally otes the republican ticket in business he sells valley tan to tha cormons mormons and brigham young bitters to the gentiles he does not belong to the church but he is in dose touch with the hierarchy and it has been shrewdly suspected that he pays tithing dont know exactly what the hierarchy la and possibly I 1 am not justified in using tha word without giving proper credit to the salt lake tribune whatever it is klesel Is in touch with it what is the secret of ta success he has achieved in so rny different lines work without worry that ie the keynote ot his life optimism hope when alexander of macedonia before his asiatic campaign divided his revenues among his friends he was asked what do you keep for yourself sire his reply was optimism it was this hope that enabled the youngest general of the ages to vanquish all nations and then sigh for more worlds to conquer at nearly twice the age of alexander who conquered the world and died at 32 our optimist the genial did not take chloroform and under its destructive influence go to the happy hunting grounds beyond the stars bat instead said the choir of my city calls roc and I 1 must give t help and EO he Is with us today full of hope un celebrating on this memorable occasion upon more than one occasion he has given evidence of optimism and refuted the charge of the cynic that an optimist was one who was married and said iro waa glad of it indeed in mr klesel we have the I 1 alon of the adage be old nhsn you are young that you may be young when you aro old it is gratifying to noto the pres ence hero today ot two of most prominent citizens judge L W ashurt alff and lion joseph stanford both residents of ogden we do not deem them old simply because they show a little white or grey hair they aro two ot our young men like mr klebel who always lend effective aid and influence to all public enterprises which require push and energy and active work to bring them to sac culmination speaking of age a man Is lust as fu as he feels and a woman Is no older than she wants to be I 1 am told that when one passes three score and ten the natural me has the ama charm that it has to youth the officers ot the army and navy have an age limit and in some states the roll of the years disqualifies the judiciary the system may be a good one but in many cases t deprives the public of many of the ablest and best equipped men dr Ost lers chloroform should not be tor age but for incompetence napoleon lost his power at 36 and byron his genius several years earlier but on the other hand some of the greatest thinkers the world has ever known ware those whose alrea were said to have been burned out at 40 and who did not mature till 60 and whose greatest achievements cams in the 25 years succeeding there is no crime in old age you are censurable only if as tho fool said to lear you get old without getting wise mayor ot ogden with his 45 winters has tha bald pate of a man of 80 while the bland deputy has the experience and years of 60 but the smile ot 40 the inference Is plain it Is better to cultivate hope than ambition there should be eo much room lc this world taken up by the smiles that there is no place for the tears work and fun are the sources of happiness and long life our thoughts should not be ot the grave tor we are altogether too long a time dead but of the uplifting duties and pleasures of the world we live in A philosopher once said we began life naked and bare it Is full of trouble and care we go only god knows where if we are all right here we will be all right there we began life naked and bare it has some tro bules but more happiness rare it we do our best god will take care both here and there |
