Attacks on members of Catholic orders In Mexico during the Carranza rebellion and the looting of schools, hospital churches and other establishments under their control were described before tho senate sen-ate Mexican investigating committee today by Monsignor Francis C. Kelly, president of the Catholic Extension society of the United Stntes. Conditions became so bad, he said, that a general exodus of Catholic orders or-ders from Mexico 'occurred. Women frequently were outrageously abused, the witness declared. Carranza soldiers as well as bandits participated in the looting of ischools, , churched and other institutions, .Monsignor .Mon-signor Kellv declared, i One of the chief causes of present and past Mexican disorganization, Mr. j Kelly said, was the "denial to the people peo-ple of religious liberty and freedom .of conscience." He asserted that while the "Mexican "Mexi-can people loved the ehurch, the politicians politi-cians have always hated and feared it for its educational work, and its hold on the affections of the people." |
