Ballif. former County Coun-ty attorney of Utah County and prominent Provo lawyer, today announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for state attorney general in the September Septem-ber primary election. The son of John L. and Emma Smith Ballif, Mr. Ballif was born in Logan. He is a grandson of early Cache County pioneers. For years Mr. Ballif has been active in civic, church, legal and political circles in Utah county. He served as a missionary for the L. D. S. church in France and England from 1914 to 1910. In 1918 he entered the service of the nation in the World War and was assigned to the 91st division. divi-sion. He served overseas for one year and participated in three major engagements. Since the war he. has been active among ex-service men, being a leader in the American Legion Post No. 13 in Provo and having served as Utah Department Commander Command-er of the Legion in 1931-32. He was among the first of' a group in Utah to start the! Roosevelt -for -President club 1 movement. He was the choice!; of nearly half the delegates to ! 1 the recent Democratic Slate Con- ! vention for State Chairman j Mr. Ballif was educated in Logan and Rexburg, Idaho public schools and attended high school ' at Ricks College. He received a I B. A. degree from Brigham j Young University in 1921. While 1 there he was prominent in, stud- f ent activities, particularly debat- I ing, and in his ,.a; , . t was student body president and I valedictorian of his class. He at- j I tended Harvard Law School in l 1921-22 and was graduated with 'I ,the degree of Doctor of Jurispru- dence from the University of I California Law School in 1924. He has been admitted to prac- ' tice law in the federal and state courts in Utah and the federal courts in Idaho. He was elected ihHo-q r He was elected judge of the Provo City Court in 1924 and served in that capacity for four years. In 192 8 he was elected Uah County attornev, serving one term. In 1933 he received an appointment to a part time . position as judge of the juvenile ' court in the Fourth District and t served .there for four years. Since f 1930 he has devoted himself largely to private practice in Provo, and has participated in much of the important litigation arising in Utah County.
