Show Veterinarian Advises Care Of Work Horses Horses should be kept in good condition during the winter months if they are to be ready for work in the spring, Dr. Wayne Bums, assistant professor of animal pathology at the Utah State Agricultural Agri-cultural college, advises. Teeth and feet of the horses need attention during the late fall and winter and parasites must be killed for the well-being of the farm horses. Round worms and bot flies usually us-ually bother horses, Dr. Binns explains, ex-plains, but these parasites can be destroyed by administering drugs ' under the direction of a veterinarian veterin-arian and by washing in early winter of the neck, chin, and legs with a two-percent solution of creasol. - Bot flies deposit their eggs on the hair and tips of the nose, chin, breast, and forelegs during the summer months and are later taken into the mouth of the horse where they hatch. From the mouth the tiny bots migrate to the stomach, fasten themselves to the stomach walls and spend the winter. Before the horses are turned Into their winter quarters, ftll shoes should be removed from their feet and the toe wall of the hoof trimmed carefully. The heel should not be trimmed however. The teeth should be checked and all long points, decayed or split teeth, and irregular growths removed, Dr. Birms concludes. |
