Show 83 Percent of State Farmers Pledge Food Aid Preliminary reports from all of Utah's 29 counties on the farm-to-farm canvas as a part of the "Food for Freedom" and farm defense de-fense program show 88 percent of the farmers have pledged support of the program. Although the canvass came in a very busy season for farmers and some of them are away from home in defense industries, these first reports from the counties some of them made two and three days before the deadline, November Novem-ber 29 show a high percentage of cooperation, declared A. Golden Kilburn, executive assistant AAA in an explanation of the report, i Based on the estimate that a 100 percent sign-up would reach 24,000 farmers, the 21,124 farmers farm-ers now signed in the program would be approximately 88 percent. per-cent. Of this number around 20,-500 20,-500 have indicated intentions to also participate in the AAA farm program. This is approximately 97 percent of all farmers signing up, Mr. Kilburn pointed out. Of the three percent who signed sign-ed up for the defense program and not the AAA farm program, many are poultrymen who would have no objection in cooperating with the AAA. November 29, was set as the deadline on the farm-to-farm canvass can-vass because of pressure in deter- mining if food production goals set up by the U. S. department j of agriculture would be pledged by American farmers. To meet lend-lease commitments to Britain Brit-ain supplies of food for the 130,- 000,000 eaters in the United States, and for stockpiles of food for peace, department officials were anxious to know just what farmers would pledge themselves to produce. The early deadline has now made this information available avail-able to them, Kilburn said. He commended highly the work of county and community committeemen commit-teemen and farm supervisors In completing the canvass within the specified time. Many of these men have been putting in 14 to 18 hours a day to be sure every farmer In the state had a chance to indicate his willingness to support sup-port the food program. Where unforseen obstacles have interferred with the canvass 8 few extra days of grace have bene granted and it Is exacted, Mr Kilburn opined, tfiat by the Kme I the final report is sent to Wash-I Wash-I ir.gton. D. C. December 12 that ! it will show nearly 100 percent of j the farmers of the state signed up ; in the farm defence program. |
