Show WELFARE REFORM IN THE LEGISLATURE There has been a desire upon the part of many community leaders for some time now that there should be a change in the welfare set-up in the state. The Governor has shown a desire for such a thing and has indicated that he would like the present session of the legislature to amend the existing laws so a more liberal attitude towards 'the recipients of welfare may be administered by the welfare board. This is going to be a hard thing to do if politics enters into the question. Like many other worthwhile measures, both in the state and nation, this one will be tied up merely because of party jealousy. We get this thought from the following statement made by members of the senate as recorded in the press reports re-ports Monday morning: "That would be a fine thing for the Governor in 1944" was the statement attributed to Senator Claud Hirschi (R). "It appears that he (the Governor) is looking forward to the 1944 campaign" is the statement made by Senator Mitchell Melich (R). It is a sad thing when men, who are elected to do all they can for the benefit of humanity, should express ex-press the fear in passing good laws because those laws would make friends for the person or persons sponsoring spons-oring them'. Just such a thing happened in the nation when President Woodrow Wilson's ideals of world peace through the working of the League of Nations was rejected by our own country the rejection, in our opinion, was made because of party jealousy. If that had not entered into the picture the League of Nations would have functioned and . the terrible war of today would never have been fought. |
