Show .' very shortly retire, and common I decency shou'.d suggest to them J the futility of taking up a work they cannot complete. CIIILDI3! FOLLY.; The Democratic city council-men council-men of Logan are just now mak- ing a sorry spectacle of themselves. them-selves. In these last days of their term and. of the building season they , are determined , to launch the building.. of a city hall. : It is plainly evident that their determination is influenced entirely by .vindictive motives. ' They care, nothing for the fact that there is not a brick to be ' purchased in Cache . county. They care nothing for the fact . that it will be impossible to even build the foundation before -the advent of cold weather. They care nothing for the fact that in : a matter of such importance their; successors are entitled to consideration. consid-eration. Their only desire is to hamper the work of the incom-'; ing administration and place 1 upon its shoulders the heaviest load that can be gotten together. They arc plainly making an exhibition ex-hibition of petulance that is characteristic of a wayward child, and we predict that they are sinking their party deeper and deeper into the slough of despond by such action. j first place the firs ,..n's ; hall lot is entirely the wrong! place for a city hall. Ir will I crowd out large business struc- j . tures in tne years to come. A public building of that character j should be a little farther away and on a corner. It is better apart! from ths rush and noise of busi- J ness, and it should not take up ' valuable ground which might1 otherwise contain large business' blocks. - j Again, it is a question whether wheth-er Logan requires as. yet a city hall costing the amount proposed. It is gratifying to have public officers comfortably housed, but it is not wise to build in advance of requirements. Logan . city is paying $20 per month rent. That is interest on $2,000. Ifj we build a city hall costing $7,-,' 000 that will be $70 per month j interest, or $50 more than we are ' now paying in rent. We believe a city hall could be built for $4,-000 $4,-000 which would furnish offices for the mayor, marshal, recorder, ! treasurer, justice and a council chamber for $4,000 or $5,000 at the most, and such a building would sc ve the purpose of the city for some years to come. It could be so arranged that additions addi-tions aould be made as future necessity demanded. If there is more than enough money, for a building of this size, the surplus could be used in reducing the present municipal indebtedness. These are some 'of the questions ques-tions which the present city council should seriously consider before plunging recklessly into further expenditure. They will ' |
