Show BATTLE WITH HOLD-UPS. Salt Lake Police Officer Gets His Man j in a Game Fight In an encounter with three hold-ups whom he was attempting to arrest, Officer Of-ficer Horace A. Heath, of Salt Lake City, on Monday night shot and killed one of the men and was himself sho( in the foot, the wound not being serious, seri-ous, however. The battle with the bandits was the sequel to the attempted robbery of tha grotery store of J. O. Morrison. Ai about 7 o'clock p. m. a masked man armed with a rifle entered the store and commanded Mr. Morrison to throw up his hands. The grocer ran to a rear room, instead, and returning with a six-shooter, opened tire, the fire be-ing be-ing returned by the man with the rifle Two other masked men entered the store about this time, and in the fusillade fusil-lade one of the hold-ups was wounded The would-be robbers, seeing they were getting the worst end of it, lefl the store without securing any booty, the uninjured men supporting theii wounded companion. The police were immediately notified noti-fied of the attempted robbery, and a search was made for the bandits, witn the result that Officer Heath encountered encount-ered -the men and attempted to arrest them. The men began firing and Heath returned the fire, with the result that one of the men was killed and Heath was wounded. The name of the dead robber is not known, but he is believed to be a celebrated cele-brated Colorado crook and one of the men who held up a street car crew in Salt Lake City a few nights ago. About a half hour before the attempt at-tempt at robbery three men, supposedly supposed-ly the same desperadoes, held up T. F. Morris at Seventh West and Fifth South streets. Morris struggled hard with the men, but was overpowere.d and robbed of $10.30. He was tightly bound and gagged and left lying in the street. After the bandits left him lie got to his feet, and despite the ropes about his legs, hobbled to his home, a distance of two blocks, where his wife untied the bonds. |
