Show SPLENDID STOCK OF BOOKS. We lately inspected the stock of books, etc., which Mr. J.T. Hammond, bookseller, recently purchased in the east, and which books now displaying. It is the finest, by far, ever seen in this valley, and rivals the best in Salt Lake. It includes a line of fine books for holiday presents, &c., such as elegant and illustrated editions of the poets, Shakespeare Gallery, &c. This department includes a fine assortment of bibles illustrated by Dore and other artists, some of them as low as $3 in price, and a line of albums of the most elegant description. Some of the latter are very handsome indeed, and all are sold at very low prices. There is also a large number of volumes of the poets, handsomely bound, besides complete sets of Dickens at $1 per volume; of Scott at $1; of Irving at $1.75; of ?. P. Rowe, at $1.50; and of Mrs. Holmes at $1.50. These are all beautifully bound. The "12 mo" series , including standard biographies, tales, &c., are $1 per volume. Hume's history of England in 6 volumes is $5?; Macauley's in 3 volumes is $4, both nicely bound. The juvenile book department includes full sets of Oliver Optic's works at $1.25 to $1.50 per vol., and of Abbot's histories at $1 each, besides an immense variety of volumes suitable for presents to children, picture and alphabet books, &c., from 15 cents each, up. The line of school books, slates, &c., is complete. The stock of Japanese goods is replete with curious, useful and beautiful articles; such as nests, cabinets, work boxes, &c., all of which are very cheap considering the work on them. One of the novelties of Mr. Hammond's stock is an assortment of papatries? or fancy stationary boxes, very neat and elegant. A lot of beautiful and fancy inkstands are very attractive, and the work boxes from 83? cents to $1 each are very useful articles. In the show case we saw some photograph frames that were patterns of beauty and elegance. On the whole Mr. Hammond's stock is full, large and varied, and replete with numberless articles, useful, beautiful and ornamental, which are just the things for presents, and to supply the demands of the holiday season. Our readers and storekeepers throughout the county should see this stock before purchasing elsewhere. |
