For Drivers A coordinated campaign at the federal, state and local levels designated to significantly reduce the estimated 26,000 violent deaths and 750,000 serious injuries caused by drinking drivers each year has been launched. of FarCongressman Jim Hansen, mington joined Congressmen Michaeal Barnes and Glenn Anderson plus other national leaders at the press conference in calling on federal and state governments to take strong measures to solve the problem of drinking drivers. At a news conference, Hansen called drinking drivers one of Americas greatest tragedies. It is time, Hansen said, that we, as members of Congress, take immediate action to help stem the carnage on our nations highways. This year alone, 26,000 Americans will be killed because of drinking drivers. The human suffering inflicted on the American public by drinking drivers can no longer be tolerated by a sane society. Throughout the nation during the past decade, over 250,000 Americans have lost their lives in alcohol-relateauto, crashes. This drinking driver problem causes an estimated economic cost of over $5 billion each year. That means nearly 70 Americans are killed in drunk driving incidents every day, and one American life is lost every 21 minutes to drinking drives. According to Utah Public Safety Division 1980 statistics, 30.8 percent of the drivers involved in fatal accidents on Utahs highways had been drinking. In 1980, there were 292 fatal accidents in Utah and 335 people were killed in those accidents. In 1980, there were 13,853 injury accidents in Utah, and of those, 1,503 involved drinking drivers. Hansen recounted at the conference how, during the past five months, he has suffered two automobile accidents at the hands of drinking drivers. In both accidents, Hansen said, my cars were totaled and both people who ran into me had been drinking. In the first accident, I only suffered cuts, bruises and sprains, but in the second accident, my wife sustained a compression fracture of the back, my daughter suffered a cervical fracture in her neck, and my son fractured his elbow. My wife was flat on her back for weeks and still has problems getting around. In a separate letter, Congressman Hansen joined Congressmen Barnes and Anderson in calling on President Reagan to appoint a Blue Ribbon Presidential Commission to bring together experts to develop a national master plan to deal with the drinking driver problem. Congressman Hansen also encouraged every d state Governor to establish a task force to deal with drinking drivers at the state and local levels. County and City task forces in Maryland, California and New York have already gone into action.
