Show MARCH 28, 1984 Father, Son Combination m w Mmm Help Lead Coed Track By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - This Friday in Clearfield, CLEARFIELD the Falcon baseball team kick's off their 1984 Region One schedule by hosting their good ole arch rivals from the Layton Lancers. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports . " . Frank Thompson, the newly appointed women s track coach at Davis High and his son, Bart, the first year womens coach at Clearfield High, have a way of making things interesting. i THEYRE MOVING in an opposite direction of a tradition that usually has the son and father on the sa side of fence, m,yb something like what Frank and Scott Layden have going with the Utah Jazz or Ray and Joey Meyers situaion with the Depaul Blue Demons. With Bart still living in the same household as his father in Kaysville, we certainly hope the tranquility that has been there will last a little longer. . 1 excellence in basketball. If Thompson can get em working hard, which he knows is possible because of what theyve demonstrated in volleyball and basketball, then the rest of Region Four will have their hands full in bringing them down. ACTUALLY IN truth, Frank, who has been coaching for almost ever, was as proud as a peacock when Clearfield called Bart to see if he was interested in coaching there. The Falcons now have the younger Thompson calling the shots in mens cross country and womens track and field. He also lends a helping hand to Scott Tennis in the wrestling program. Frank thought his head coaching days were over, primarily through choice, but it just happened this spring that the Lady Darts were in need of a coach and he was the only logical choice. CLEARFIELD HIGH CLEARFIELD Folks, this might be the year of the Lady Falcon in womens track and field. It appears Bart will have plenty of strength in the field events as well as the running events to pool together as possible region and state championship team. Weber, of course, will be Clearfields main challenge in region and state. - meet. Both the Darts and the Falcons will have better than average track teams this season. In fact the Las Vegas bookmakers make Clearfield one of the heavy favorites in their region and state. The bookies also like Davis in Region Four if Susan DeVries of East doesn't steal the show entirely. I . - KAYSVILLE Franks Lady Darts have some solid seniors and a crop of talented juniors and sophomores. In a dual against Viewmont last Friday, they clipped the Vikings pretty good, a team that many expected to win the 1984 Region Four womens title. JIM BATCHELOR will contend with Hartman for time at first base. Jim is a junior. At shortstop the Lancers have Brian Bailey returning there. He was Laytons shortstop through most of last season. SO FOR Brad Hawkins and Ken Hicks, you get after it like you always do and well make sure Col. Sanders has us supplied for a dinner break. The close athletic battles between the two schools have continued right into 84. In football it was a heartbreaking overtime loss for Clearfield. In basketball on the mens side the games were always in question and with the girls, it was simply closer than ever. LAST SEASON in baseball, these two decisions that Layton incidently won. Get the picture, its hard to place your bet. Lets take a look at both clubs. schools battled to two Lancer Scouting Report - With Brad Hawkins per of the Layton team, weve as the skipall come to expect nothing but the best. Even though the head coach hasn't had the Wasatch Front's won a region greatest talent, hes title or tied for it every yeur hes been at Layton High. But you can almost bet your house that Hawkins will have his team in the 2-- -4 WEVE GOT some good, solid seniors this year and if we can combine them with some talented juniors, well have it made," said Hicks. Clearfield will rely on Jeff Parry, Folk, and Phil Peterson to do the job on the mound this year. Danny Richardson, Greg Bozeman and Ryan Fisher can also do the job. THE NUMBER one pitcher for Hawkins looks to be James Kortwright, with Bailey also scheduled to do some throwing. Chris Morrie is another junior that could see some throwing action. Another is Ayuma Kikuhara, another junior pitcher. HICKS IS experimenting with Parry at We might be a pretty good team by midseason, said Hawkins, We just wont get catcher this year. Their bats didnt speak too loud in the first couple of outings against Bountiful and Woods Cross, losing 1 and 1 respectively, but since that time theyve got a little loosened up. In their third outing they and put a 0 defeat blasted Ben Lomond 1 on Ogden. Keeping healthy is the key to any great season and Clearfield is hoping that Greg Folk is fully recovered from knee surgery. He is the Falcons prize hitter, a capable pitcher and a superb infielder. Folk is one that Hicks does not want to lose. Hicks claims that Folk should be at full speed against Layton on Friday. Along with Mike Call, the leftfielder. Folk is presently leading the team in slugging percentage. Even though the 0 score against Ogden was low, Folk and his teammates hit the ball fairly well against Ogdens two best pitchers. either Folk or Troy Markham. In the outfield, the Falcons go with Mike Call, Phil Peterson and Mark Adams. She ran the intermediate hurdles on Friday for the first time ever and won it. Tammy Duke will be Davis best sprinter in the 100, 200 and 400 meters. She'll also be a strong leg in the Dart relays. relays. Garcia, Clements, Sharon Anderson and Kris Done were the four that made up last year's winning state mile relay team. In the hurdles, Anderson is a strength without question. In both the highs and the lows, her times would have qualified her for the state meet last Friday. Done is the team's sprinter and long jumper. Done won the 100, 200 and both relays she participated in last Friday. ANNE PROKOPIS, just a sophomore, won the high jump Friday and as a member of o champion relay teams. Other big names are Rechelle Badoni, Heather Briggs and Sharlcen Pippy. And there are others too of which time will only tell. SARAH HILLER will master high jump where she has been over five feet several times. The Darts will have other names surface to the top as the year progresses especially since had such a slow start because of the I JANA MOWER has her stuff down in the shot put and discus, winning both in a last Friday against Bountiful and Mountain Crest. Sue Thurgood is her partner in the field events and she was nearly as successful as she won the javelin and was second in the discus. Thurgood's javelin throwing would have been enough to qualify her for state had it been accomplished in an invitational. Jana is a senior and Sue is a junior. woman on the Perhaps the Lady Falcon team is Laura Zuagg. She is the school record holder in the long jump and if she isnt performing in that, shes doing whatever Thompson wants her to do to counter against other teams. Shes a relay great, a 400 and 800 meter giant, a power to be reckoned with in the hurdles and is a tremendous threat in the high jump which she won last Friday in the ZAL'GG IS the defending state champion in the BYU Invitational Hepthalon, which is eight grueling events all combined into one day. She is stronger and better than last year and should defend her title. is Stephanie Another Clearfield Clements. Bart describes her as the workhorse of the team, running a couple of quarter-mile- s and a half mile every year. Stephanie won the" 400 meters last Friday and should be one of the states finest in that event. She is also a great addition to Clearfield's fine relay tandem. LISA GARCIA won the 800 meters last FriGear-field- s day and was a significant addition to THIS GAME is supposed to begin at somewhere around 3 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. But if youve got other plans and cant make it until around 6 p.m., dont fret too much, theyll probably still be playing until the night owls finally come out or the rains finally drown an outfielder. See folks, when Layton and Clearfield finally get ready to battle on the field or the court, you just dont come to expect anything less overtime fiasthan a co. It doesnt matter what the sport or whos the most talented, it seemingly never fails. et ON TUESDAY of the week, Frank and Bart had called a grudge match. Thats when Franks girls at Davis went against the very respectable team at Clearfield High in a preseason meet. But it wont be the last time these two will square off. The Lady Falcons and Lady Darts will match up several more times in big invitationals and ultimately at the state DAVIS HIGH It will be up to this bunch to make sure this is the year of the Lady Falcon in womens track and field.
