Show j TWENTY-TWO DIE IN MINE. i Broken Grvuse in Safety Lamp Causes . Explosion. ! Raleigh, N. C, May 23. Twenty-two miners, ten white men and twelve negroes, ne-groes, lost their lives in the explosion at the Cummock coal mines, Chatham county, North Carolina, yesterday af- I ternoyn. The explosion is supposed to have been caused by a broken gauge in a safety lamp. The accident was in what is. known as the east heading. Between forty and fifty men were in the mine at the time. Five men were brought out alive from the cast heading, while none of the men in. the other parts of the mine were injured. in-jured. Manv of the bodies were burned. The funerals took nlace today. The disaster is the fourth at this mine. About eighty-five men have lost their lives and many others have been injured. |
