Show na-y toiay probably has the highest quality of enlisted personnel in its' history. The Aeronautique Internationale of Paris has officially recognized the, mass flight of United States navy seaplanes from San Francisco, Calif., to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as the new distance record for that type of ship. They flew 2,399 miles. The distance record for mass flight of 2,286 miles was previously held by the French. When Uncle Sam, in the capacity of navy housewife, goes shopping to provide victuals for the navy's table, the items are somewhat staggering. Imagine a grocery list like this: 900 tons of flour; 2,000,000 pounds of beef; 2,000,000 pounds of milk; 32 carloads of fresh eggs; 1,800,000 pounds of sugar; 200,000 pounds of canned tomatoes; 200,000 pounds of vegetable shortening; 190,00o pounds of apricots; 150,000 pounds of pickles; 700,000 pounds of fresh vegetables, and one carload of turkeys. This was the first order placed for the fleet when it arrived in, the Atlantic waters wa-ters recently. A first-class navy diver, must be able to work at a depth of 150 feeV and be able to withstand the pressure at 200 feet. He must be able to use the tools and equipment provided for underwater work. The greatest depth worked by navy divers in a rubber suit is about 300 feet and in a metal suit they have worked in a depth of 320 feet. I International law demands that ships of all nations hut one carry hells for timekeeping- and fog-signalling. Turkish ships are permitted to use a drum for fog-signaling. I There were 3,694 men applying for enlistment in the navy at the Salt Lake Recruiting district during the fiscal year 1934 July '33 to July '34). Of this number 522 were actually ac-tually enlisted. All large naval vessels which pass under the Brooklyn bridge have to' lower their topmasts to go under the bridge. The height of the bridge is 127 feet 11 inches. Six of San Francisco's principal streets are named for naval officers. Fifty (50) men will be enlisted in the navy from the Salt Lake recruit- j ing district during the month of Au- j gust, 1934. I During the War of 1812, Midship-1 man David Farragut (later Admiral Farragut of Civil War fame), who was not quite twelve years old, was placed in command of the "Barclay" as prize master and successfully took the ship from Ecuador to Valparaiso, Chile. The largest ships is the United States navy are the airplane carriers car-riers Lexington and Saratoga. Each is 888 feet long. Battleships are about 608 feet long. The first steel ship of domestic manufacture in the United States navy was built in 1885 and was named nam-ed the Dolphin. This vessel served over 36 years. The Spanish law which governed the life of the sailor of Columbus' time required him to be ready for any kind of duty at any time. In fact, it went so far as to forbid him to undress unless he happened to be in port for the winter. A BIG(JOB LIES I AHEAD. While generally in accord with the efforts being made to restore prosperity pros-perity to these United States and favoring everything that has been done to help distressed individuals, I it is realized that the emergency will j one day be over and that the next job ,of immensity will be pulling the snouts out of the trough. It will be the second phase of the peaceful Am-: rrican revolution. j |
