Show THE SUN SPOTS. To men who have the apparatus to examine it closely, the sun ought to be a most interesting study these days. The sun spot period is at its maximum. The theory ot most scientists is that sun spots are caused by the bending down of the sun's corona under the pressure of heavy meteoric matter which, drawn from the ether, feeds the sun's everlasting fires. Another theory is that the spots reveal the sun's surface through openings in the golden Corona that surrounds it high in its celestial atmosphere, oven as the aurora borealis blazes in the earth's northern sky. If this last theory is the true one, it seems to us it negatives the other theory that the sun is but a rolling, great world of fire, for were it so, with the photosphere photo-sphere broken in places there would be evidences of that tremendous and perpetual conflagration, while if the newer theory is the correct one that the sun is a stable and delightful spnere, that Its seeming fire is but an indescribably beautiful Corona which surrounds it; that the light and warmth given satellites and- planets are but the electricity thrown off; from this Corona, making its way through all tho icy abysses of space until striking the negative pole of terrestrial atmospheres atmos-pheres it is kindled into warmth and light; then the sun spots are but glimpses of the, sun's real surface seen in shadow. They dhould be carefully studied, for In these modern times earth and heaven are drawing nearer to each other, and there might be, through m the perfected' instruments! of modern times, MH glimpses obtained which would be enchanting; M glimpses which would magnify the majesty and j M glory of the universe and mark man's ascent a : M little higher toward that plane on which the angels1""' H stand. fl One scientist predicts as one result of the sun H spots, ten years of storms on the earth. We have H not seen his reasoning, but presume he estimates j H that as the sun is entering upon its maximum 1 H sun spot period, which will continue for three or u H four years and that then, as the sun is seven or j H eight years returning from the maximum to the I H minimum period, atmospheric disturbances above H the earth will continue for perhaps ten years. He j H doubtless believes that the sun spots are not open- ' H ings but depressions in the Corona caused by H the falling meteoric matter into the sun to feed ! H its fires. That is the generally accepted theory, H but we cannot comprehend it, for it seems to us H that, aside from the incredible phenomenon, it H would be contrary to the thought of supreme in- i H telligence. But it has 'been noted that during a H period of maximum sun spots, there are severe H storms on the earth and a good deal of sickness H among men and animals, probably due to atmos- ,; H pheric disturbances and perhaps a dimunitlon of 'f. H some of the rays of the sunight. The spectro- i H scope reveals that in a maximum period of sun i H spots, there is a vast?absorption of the blue rays. t H But the explanations) given by , science up to M date are not satisfactory to account for various ' M phenomena experienced on the earth. We have M to accept the facts just as the men and women M of the world took certain medicines for the heal- , M ing of disease before chemistry became a science. H They only knew that other .people afflicted as H they were had taken the remdy and were helped M by it. What the most learned do not know about the ' M workings of the machinery of the universe would M still make a large book and out of the confusion i M there is but one really comforting thought, which M is, that it was all wisely and mercifully planned M and that the Great Artisan is still watching and ! M keeping the tremendous enginery in perfect re- f H pair. M |
