Show B19 Castle Valley Review, March 2009 Continued from Previous Page. can be brought back. If it does work out, it is adopted and the adoption fee is paid. The spay or neuter surgery is then scheduled. Mixed breeds can bring out good characteristics of more than one breed and lessen some of the undesirable characteristics. For example, pug crosses may have a slightly longer nose and therefore less breathing problems and still have a really cute face. The decision to buy a purebred dog usually carries a higher a price tag and you may not get more for your buck. Just because a dog is purebred or registered does not give it any guarantees other than that the lineage has been recorded with a breed registry. This information is usually only as accurate as what the breeder reports. There are some registries that may do some DNA testing, but I am not aware that this is commonplace. Puppies that are registered are usually not tested to confirm parentage. Knowing the parentage will give you some information, if you know anything about the parents. You may find out that dogs in the line did well in the show ring or at hunting trials. However, registration itself does not give any information about the dogs health, ability to perform work or to produce offspring. If these things are important to you, you need to ask lots of questions of the breeder and ask to see documentation. For example, if buying a large breed dog, you should ask to see hip dysphasia test results for both parents. Don’t just have someone tell you that vaccinations were given, ask to see the record of health exam and vaccination. Many breeds have specific health problems that are more common for that breed. You should research this so you are prepared to find out if the parents have any of these problems. Ask to see both parents and pet them. If your are buying a working or hunting dog, you may ask to see the parents work. You may become concerned if CastleValleyReview.com Animal Hospital Your Small Animal Veterinarian (435) 637-5797 or 1-800-718-5797 the breeder won’t let you see them or you do see them and they are aggressive or in poor condition. You need to be able to trust the breeder. Many reputable breeders care so much about the dogs they produce, that they have many questions for you before they will let you buy one of their dogs. Every puppy need obedience training and socialization. It does not matter if it was a $2000 dog or one you were given for free in the grocery store parking lot. How your dog turns out will depend most on how much time you spend in good training and socialization. Socialization is exposing your puppy, through friendly encounters, to things around it that you want it to be comfortable with any time in its life. This may include toddlers and children, other dogs, cats, people in uniforms, company coming to your house, and things it will see on a walk. Common commands like “sit”, “stay”, “come”, “down”, and “heel”, should be taught. This is important even for little dogs that seem to spend all their time in the house or in someone’s arms. We all want pets that are safe and enjoyable to be around. There are many books and videos available that teach about socialization and obedience training. Check on-line or the library. Failure to socialize and give obedience training can lead to behavior problems like aggression and biting. The bottom line is, educate yourself on the breed of dog you are thinking of getting before you get it. If you buy from a breeder, ask questions, see the parents. There are great dogs at the pound that can be fostered to see if they will work in you family before you commit to having them. And finally, obedience training and socialization can not be stressed enough. No matter what type of dog you get, there is no quick magic way to automatically make it a good companion. Good dogs have had a lot of time spent with them. (Dr. Sharmon Gilbert is with Emery Animal Health in Castle Dale.)
