Show mms m e avows pmsmv DUCHESNE-Contrary to what you might have read in another newspaper this past week the Duchesne Eagle will continue to publish. In the vein of John Paul Jones, The Duchesne Eagle has just begun to fight, explains Eagle Editor Jerry Mieure. At the end of volume 15, a reappraisal of of the newspaper and its goals was taken by the Editor to determine the progress and financial success of the local Duchesne newspaper. The progress pro-gress seemed to be miraculous . . . the paper was still in business busi-ness after fifteen weeks of toiling toil-ing away, subscriptions were still rolling in and the only thing that seemed on the gloomy side was the lack of a large bank account. After worrying and stewing about the newspaper all week, it was decided that really everything was moving along pretty well and with continued support from the merchants The Duchesne Eagle would continue along the path of providing this community with newspaper service. ser-vice. One of the factors that cave I the Editor "renewed vigor and strength" was the fine support and loyality expressed at the Duchesne Lions Club meeting Thursday night. Merchants present unanimously backed the Eagle against a new challenge chal-lenge in the person of Clarin Ashby, publisher of the Uintah Basin Standard, who made his intention known of starting another newspaper in Duchesne. The old saying goes, "It all depends upon whose ox is being gored, " and the Roosevelt Roose-velt Publisher apparently decided de-cided tliat a Duchesne publish- ed newspaper was a tlireat to his domain. (Newspapers and newspaper Editors who beat the drum for freedom and free enterprise certainly can have a change of heart. ) Mr. Ashby apparently has decided that it is time to get into the act and regardless of the status of the Eagle will enter the scene with his own cast of new players. In our opinion, "local merchants mer-chants turned thumbs down . on any "squeeze play" on the Eagle and Mr. Ashby was called out by the merchant umpires as lie rounded first base. However, Clarin, a pretty good ball player in his own league, decided he'd try to steal second base anyway and that's about where the ball game sits this week as typewriters type-writers fly. So far the Eagle has lost a few advertisers but the general feeling is to support the Eagle, the newspaper that took the first step when no other newspaper news-paper expressed any active interest in this community. Publisher Mieure wishes to express ex-press his sincere thanks to everyone who has come forward to offer assistance to keep the Eagle going and wishes to make it clear in no uncertain terms that the Eagle will keep right on publishing. In addition, a few special plans have been laid and if tilings get too slim in Duchesne a branch operation might be opened in Roosevelt, where we hear there's an opening open-ing for a new newspaper and printing operation. ... on second sec-ond thought we might even announce next week the newspaper news-paper over there is closing so we can move in and take over a little easier.
