Over 200 entries were judged by the three judges from the music department of the Brigham Young University. . . Mrs. Helen Richards, David Dalton, and Paul C. Pollci. It was decided to give the rating sheets to each school to use in releasing information for publicity purposes, and for other uses of the judges comments. This is the first time in many years that the regional music festival was held at Duchesne. Du-chesne. The band concert, held in the evening, at the new gymnasium gymna-sium at die high school, drew a lot of listeners. Tins was the performance of the bands which was rated by the judges. Ratings of the 24 entries of the Duchesne High School students stu-dents in the Regional Music Festival at Duchesne were SO'-excellent SO'-excellent or very good. Forty DHS students participated partici-pated in the festival, which was under the direction of E. Allan Bates, school music instructor at Duchesne. For many of the students, it was the first time they had performed to be rated by judges renowned in their music fields. Lxcellent ratings were merited meri-ted by the woodwinds quartet, the brass quartet, and a quartet comprised of members of the junior band, all directed by Mr. Bates. Two DHS piano soloists received re-ceived excellent ratings Marsha Mar-sha Fitzwater and Sally Wimmer. Vocal soloists on the DHS roster of entries, who received excellent excel-lent ratings arc Sherry Roberts, Wendy Broadhead and Shauna Freeman Excellent rating was pegged for a girls' sextet, comprised com-prised of the following seventh grade students, lone Hooper, Wendy Broadhead, Karla Lewis, Melna Horrocks, Serena Davies, Marigold Taylor, This was their fifth year in participation in a musical activity, which was scored . Principal J. Keith Rogers, Mr. Bates, and others wish to thank all persons who helped directly or indirectly with the presentation of this music festival fes-tival in Duchesne. The judges put in 12 hours marking score sheets, with hardly a let-up, in addition to travel time - a 16 hour grueling day. They told the directors of the festival they felt many of their remarks would be constructive construc-tive to the youngsters who may benefit from the critical ratings rat-ings they marked. No superior ratings were given to the performing per-forming bands at the festival. Although many excellent and very good ratings were given gi-ven to participants in the festival, festi-val, less than 10 individuals or groups were awarded the superior super-ior mark. Special musical numbers by some of the participants were given at the band concert, i These included a vocal solo by Aria Jones, Vernal, who merited meri-ted an excellent rating; A double quartet from Tabiona, who was given an excellent rating ra-ting for their singing of "This Is My Country. " John Preston, Venial played a "superior" trumpet solo. |
