choir sang death gathers up big clouds of gloom following is a brief synopsis of the remarks made on this occasion president 0 smoot sal al i he be was pleased to may eay he had been acquainted with elder J jacob acob gates almost from the beginning in the times of nauvoo and the various scenes through which the church has hag pawed passed more than fifty years he had labored with him in the ministry and a more devoted man to his calling in the church he had never seen brother gates bad been honored by his bis promotion to the re spon aible position which be held for nearly thirty years and IT n any man ever merited such a po position posit ioa brother gates Q ites did he had been most intimately associated with him in provo for the last nine years he had been a regular attendant at the meetings and a great auxillia ry to the utah stake especially among the seventies As a counselor and adviser president amodt often had occasion to go to him and the advice received was invariably just suited to the corn com and circumstances the speaker saw no reason why we should mourn his departure after a worthy life and trusted that the family and children left behind would venerate his memory and follow in his bis footsteps which will lead them to eternal glory and exaltation al apostle moses in suh st stance aice I 1 had the great pleasure of a short acquaintance with the departed I 1 have enjoyed a few valuable conversations versa dons with him when occasions have thrown us together and I 1 have frequency sought information from brother gates with regard especially to the great modern prophet joseph JJ elmith and the early history of the church I 1 have always regarded him as a very very pure man full of integrity and love for the truth his voice never seemed tome to have a doubtful sound the doctrines he has taught among men have never seemed to have an uncertain meaning but were clear like the ringing voice you have many of the noble spirits reserved to come forth in this generation and believe that few men have improved their opportunities better than he be has A very humble bumble man yet as I 1 understood his big character a very courageous man few men that I 1 have known in the church deemed to approach in life and conversation that perfect life of a saint and not many seemed to love god with a purer heart than he be he certainly came very near loving god with all his heart might mind and strength and he has loved his neighbors also while we do not mourn his hia departure we sympathies with those who are for a season left behind who will misa his wise counsels the he speaker had not of late years regarded death as an enemy but the beginning of that higher life to come while research in science has been unable to demonstrate the immortality of the soul the rays of revelation have planted that truth as a light alight upon a hill brother gates has gone a dis associating with all the worthies of ancient and inor bordern dern times and the rapidity of the lapse of time should impress us all that we are soon to follow that we have no time to lose apostle F M lyman said this is the be third great man that has died within one week bishop edwatd edward hunter of grantsville Grants ville julian moses of east mill creek and brother jacob gates this should impress us that the veterans are rapidly passing away my first acquaintance with brother gates was in england thirty one years ago and since that time I 1 have met him frequently and loved to listen to him relate incidents connected with early church history and many times have I 1 conversed with him but never once has haa it been in regard to financial matters it has always been regarding the things of eternity and if any man has earned a crown in goda cods god a kingdom it certainly is brother gates it is in astonishing that within eight years the entire quorum of the first council of seventies has passed to adother sphere and today it is composed of members ordained ordo ined within that time the speaker invoked the blessings of god upon the family presidents president S B you young dg said brother gates to is the last link in the chain that bound our quorum to the memory of my father he was the last associated with my father in this capacity I 1 I 1 have known brother gates since I 1 was a child he was the first to bring the sad had news to my mothers mother house bouse of the death of the prophets prophet joseph and hyrum I 1 have been associated with him ever since I 1 can remember and aej never have I 1 heard his voice quiver or seen his hia knees shake in speaking of the truths of the gospel you would always know what his bis testimony would be it was the gospel or nothing lie he was fearless outspoken courageous but as gentle as a child he was a man among men known for truth firmness for wise counsel and for a strong testimony god bless his memory and his family president C D fjeldsted said I 1 have been acquainted with brother gates not many year but have been blessed with his bis presence and pro fitted by his bis good counsel many times in meeting with the council he would always have a pleasant look a kind word and good judgment in decisions he has made a splendid record and he was loved by the first council and I 1 befit beleve ve by all the saints if we emu late his good example and live worthy of his bis memory we shall be saved in the kingdom of god president john morgan said I 1 desire to bear my testimony to what has been said by the brethren regarding brother gates for I 1 have found him all that these brethren have mentioned I 1 well remember an expression he made which was called forth by so someone urging people to prepare to die his comment was 1 I am not preparing to die I 1 an a preparing to live jive liv for this life and live for the lives that are to come com e when I 1 embraced this gospel I 1 took upon me the labor of my own salvation and for the salvation of others JI 1 this idea made a great impression upon my mind and I 1 lecog niza in it a strong principle I 1 believe that jacob gates has lived out that idea he has sought tu to live and wan prepared for the death that has overtaken 4 him the inscription at rest upon his bis coffin to is true to some extent but birt to such a man as brother gates there to is no inactivity there is a labor for him in the spirit world and he will wield an influence in the heavens for good the speaker invoked the blessings of heaven to rest upon the family president B H roberts said I 1 have ben with brother gates but four years but in that short time I 1 learned to love him and felt a peculiar interest in his personality and conversations for I 1 recognized in him a representative ofa of a class of men that were very precious and whose words and counsels are very choice such representative jomen men are rapidly passing beyond the veil the class clan that I 1 refer doare to are those who were acquainted with the prophet and figured io in the early history of this church I 1 have always delighted to meet et him hear his bis conversations and bave ve been pleased to have my children reu bear the testimony of such men regarding the prophets and I 1 we will value more highly than we do now some day the testimony of such men for their personal acquaintance with the prophets the speaker referred to the value placed upon the be testimony of those who were christs apostles and those kiwo who were ere acquainted with them the doc aines they taught and the close asso asao relation with the savior or of the world af pf the speaker thought it if there was any man in israel who more than any other could say 1 I have fought the good fight I 1 have kept the faith I 1 have finished my course and henceforth there is laid up for me a crown crow n of ofleter eter nal life that man was jacob gates president george reynolds said it la in over a third of a century since I 1 had the first acquaintance with brother gates dates I 1 was wag a youth in london he was a missionary fioril zion I 1 have always rejoiced in his teachings its toned many to his wise counsels and nd have profited by the same I 1 do not feel that I 1 am in the presence vf of death in honoring him we i do honor to ourselves as the grethren Ar ethren have said and I 1 will go a little further and say that I 1 know that aad and the angels and the holy ones behind the veil will honor him for the v integrity rity and faithfulness he has exhibited habif ed in this life brother reynolds eulogized the labors and character of brother oates gates and prayed that god would bless his bin family and all israel to G see ee the importance of doing right and r living faithful and at last be exalted y la in the presence of god president J G kimball said he be was not acquainted with the deceased but jolt alt that who were left behind Wo would ulo miss a wise counselor a kind tether father and it A firm friend he believed no man could so well fill the important pai position he filled so long an fand C I 1 faithfully it if he were not a good sun man he invoked the blessings of the almighty AJ mighty upon the family and ex f hooted them to lo live to be worthy to mingle and associate with their husland huss buss liand land and futher father elders elden lorin parr farr of george 44 Goddard dard of salt bait lake and claudius V spencer and prest george Q cannon all bore a strong testimony to Us the faithful and devoted labors of brother rother batee to the wise coun counsels and ad good advice he had bad given and to the results of bin big labors in this world land held up his big life as a worthy ex ample for all to follow i throughout the services there was a feeling of peace and an influence from heaven that pervaded the hearts of the y saints and it seemed more like a beati mody of faithfulness faithful nes and good works than a funeral funera the choir sang when first the glorious Pl orious light of truth burst forth in this ibis last age 2 benediction was pronounced by apostle F M lyman and the groces slon aion fell into line and marched to the grave as aa formed at the residence of the deceased
