Mgr. 295-225- 1 (USPS 1491-5000- ) Bountiful Area C of C Pulled A Fast One By Changing Name Without Approval By GARY R. BLODGETT Clipper News Editor In my opinion. Bountiful Area Chamber of Commerce pulled a fast one when they changed the name of the organization - or at least adopted a slogan under which the Chamber said it will use to entice new businesses to south Davis County. -- WITHOUT ANY advance knowledge or input from the six communities served by the Chamber - it was announced last week that the new image of the Chamber will be The Benchmark Region. Now I ask, what connection does The Benchmark Region have with South Davis County? There is absolutely between the name and the area served by the no Chamber. -- - -- tie-i- n commentary THE NAME, according to a Chamber spokesperson, implies foresight, or standard for success. That's fine as far as it goes. BUT THERE are a lot of drawbacks to the new name. Maybe Bountiful Area Chamber of Commerce is not the best name - but at least it designates the area being served. The Benchmark Region does nothing, except to advertise a couple of businesses in the area with the name Benchmark. The name does not apply to South Davis County in any other way. -- THUS, WHEN anyone asks what does Benchmark Region means, they have to be told. And when they ask where the region exists, they have to told. At least Bountiful Area designates a location. I agree that Bountiful Area puts emphasis on Bountiful - and there are five other communities involved. So maybe the name should be changed. -- BUT WHY should the Chamber hire a consultant from a high paid advertising firm to choose the new name? Whats wrong with South Davis County being included in the name? I dont think any of the city officials from Farmington to North Salt Lake are ashamed of being connected with South Davis County. But what bothers me the most is to hear about the change first in Centerville City Council meeting and then the following night in Bountiful City Council meeting. CENTERVILLES Council had no objections to the name. Some Bountiful City Council members did. (See story on split page.) About nine months ago, Chamber officials approached each community and asked each council for a donation. Bountiful gave $15,000, North Salt Lke donated $10,000 and the four other cities gave lesser amounts. AT THE TIME of the pledge last year, Bountifuls Council included in its motion that the money would be appropriated only if Bountiful could be assured that it would have input to how the money was spent and no major decisions (by the Chamber) would be made unless city officials were first consulted. This didn't happen and Im very upset about it, commented Bountiful Mayor Dean S. Stahle. These assurances were made to us as a council and were not followed. or anyone else hears about it - is when The first we brochures are printed. and we are told what has already happened. Thats not the way it was supposed to be. -- THE MAYOR noted that it was not expected of the Chamber to have a council member sit on the Chamber Board, "but we did expect you (Chamber) to keep your word that Bountiful would be allowed input and consultation before major decisions were made. The Chamber has done a lot, on a limited budget, in an attempt to attract new businesses into the area. But what has it done for existing merchants? brochures that were printed arc THE 3,000 very attractive but no where - except in very small type on the back cover - does it mention the cities being represented - or what the cities have to offer. Haven Burningham, executive director of the Chamber, said the (Bountiful) councils criticism was unfair and that the council should recognize the good being done by the Chamber. full-col- -- -- -- THE CHAMBER is doing a good job - and on shoestring budget - but I still maintain that too little concern was given to communities involved when they (Chamber) announce what they have done instead of what they are planning to do. Perhaps an alternative would be for Bountiful to have its own Chamber of Commerce. -- -- e Q. Richard Gere is my favorite actor. Please tell me about him. Michelle Russell, Prairieville, La. I -- Shades of Gray Communications Ask For Sunset Mayors He Says Resignation-N- o By DONETA GATHERUM - SUNSET "No, I will not resign from my position as Mayor," stated Mayor Norman Sant of Sun- set last Tuesday evening. THE STRONG reply came after listening to Wallace Braithwaite, Sunset resident who w;as responsible for circulating a petition among Sunset resident asking for the mayor's resignation. The citizens petition was on the agenda item listed on the council meeting items of business. It was taken up first. MAYOR SANT yielded his presiding position to Councilman Clifford Spendlove to conduct the discussion that centered around the petition. NEARLY 120 citizens were in attendance at the council meeting, the largest number to be at a council meeting in at least three years. As the discussion progressed, it became apparent that everyone in attendance was not in opposition to Mayor Sant. In fact, it seemed the majority seemed to support the mayor. MR. BRAITHWAITE read from his prepared petition. A large growing group of residents. ..feel the actions have broken the oath of office... Mayor Sant can no longer represent us as mayor. ..To avoid further embarrassment we request you tender in your resignation. There were 257 names on the petition. Mr. Braithwaite indicated he would continue to circulate the petition because the drive had lasted only four days, and the cold weather hampered those who were involved in getting the petition to the people. SEVERAL allegations were made in the statement read by Mr. Braithwaite. Councilman Spendlove asked him to document his charges and to give the petition and the documentation to the city reso that the council could study the material collected by the citizens. At the close of the meeting, the citizens had not handed in the corder documentation Councilman Spendlove requested. MR. BRAITHWAITE contended Mayor Sant's actions and management style had forced the two office workers. Janet Gros-kreut- z and Kathryn Wood to resign. He said at least nine employees in addition to these ladies had resigned in the recent past because ol the mayor. |
