By ROSELYN KIRK Heber Kimball, clinical psychologist at the Davis County Family and Community Mental Health Center says that stress leads to the inability to make good decisions, plan work effectively and efficiently and get proper rest. WHILE LEARNING the principals of Yoga, he went three times to India where he studied the techniques of the Fellowship. He said the system teaches one to retain control of the body, and, through breath control, to conserve energy. The eight fold system of Yoga, takes many years to achieve. The word yoga means union, Dr. Kimball said. He explained that the eight steps are: moral HE HOPES to teach people how to reduce stress with a relaxation training and meditation course which will begin Thursday, September 22 at the Davis County Mental Health Center. Dr. Kimball says, Many great minds are endorsing meditation." Although meditation was originahy an eastern concept taught by gurus in India, China and other eastern cultures, it is being endorsed by many western psychologists and medical minds under such terms as and mind and body control. THE MEDITATION class, which will teach people how to get rid of their anxieties, fears and negative emotions, will deal with specific teachings showing how to gain this mind control. Dr. Kim- conduct, religious observances, right posture, control of subtle life currents, withdrawal of the senses from external concentration and superconobjects, science experience. DR. KIMBALL pointed out that Yoga, although it can become a religious experience, is not connected with any church or religion. The class itself will deal with a scientific study of techniques for relaxation. Sometimes the label scares people, he said. Dr. Kimball explained that when people in western culture say they cant learn meditation because its a product of another culture, they are copping out. All is needed is a desire to meditate, he said. James Lynn, a midwestern businessman reached the final state of yoga in five years. BUT WHEN Dr. Kimball first heard the guru when he was 18, he admitted he thought it was something out of Grimes Fairy Tales. But after some time in Corps, I went back to hear it again Dr. Kimand decided it was fantastic. ball spent six months with the guru in the but I felt I sanctuary in Los Angeles, wasnt worthy to become a persona! dis- ball said. I want people to get into meditation and have the experience, he said. The approach to meditation will be based on a scientific and very methodical approach which can result in peace and calmness, he said. IN ADDITION to his position at the mental health center, Dr. Kimball has taught ten sessions of the course at Weber State College and will be presenting some of the philosophies from the art of meditation over radio KSXX on a monthly basis. HOW many times have you heard someone say that? Or said it yourself? Backache is such a common ailment among civilized man that there are very few adults who havent had a touch of it now and then. SOME physicians credit soft beds, soft chairs and other comforts of modern civilization with an increase in the number of persons suffering from low back pain, the American Medical Association points out. Once called lumbago, back pain is often caused by poor or posture, obesity, inappropriate shoes, a sedentary life, overly strenuous work, or participating in sports. It may also be caused by disease not directly relating to the back, or to injury or strain.
