His PAT made it 24-- 0 with 8:58 left in the third quarter, and the rest was history. Wests final score summed up the kind of afternoon Woods Cross didnt enjoy Friday. In the NL East we got to see the Phillies fight not only the Expos, but the ghosts of 1964 as well. And then there was the NL West. Isnt the race between the Braves and Giants reason enough to keep the current system? Proponents of the new system will argue that what is wrong with baseball right now is that a team can win 100 games and still not make the playoffs and that Atlanta is definitely in the eastern half of the country. But even if both these teams had made the playoffs, wed only get to see them do intense battle for two weeks. Under the present system we got to see them do intense battle for two months. Every game in August and September was a must win situation for both teams. Both played incredibly in certain stretches. Barry Bonds and Fred Crimedog McGriff stepped forward and carried their teams like few ever have. Now lets take a look at what ! the new system would have given us. The Giants would have wrapped this race up by Memorial Day, their nearest competitor over twenty games away by the end of the season. It will probably stay that way for the next few years. The Giants have Bonds under contract through 1998. The Dodgers are playing .500 ball and trying to figure out why they ever spent free-agebig bucks on trouble magnets like Daryl Strawberry and Eric Davis. The Rockies and Padres have the lowest payrolls in the league and are working on developing young talent. Theyre both kind of like Senator Bob Dole, they could be hot in 1996. NL Central: St. Louis, Houston, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh. You do get a race in this division between the Cubs, Astros and Cardinals, but it could be called a real dead heat. Winning just a bit over half your games gives you a shot in this slag heap and its hard to get excited about a playoff team that wins around 85 games. . NL East: Atlanta, Philadelphia, Montreal, Florida and New York Mets. Not much of a contest here. The Braves and the Phillies might have a little bit of a race, but since they will both get to go to the playoffs (one as champ the other as not that hio a Ha1 wilfirflrrn , nt AL East: New York Yankees, Toronto, Baltimore, Detroit and Boston. All five of these teams challenged for the division title this year so there would really be no change except for you get rid of the Milwaukee Brewers who lost over 90 games in 1993, and the Cleveland Indians who will be entering the 40th year of their rebuilding program in 1994. So there would be one good pennant race. This division would also get the wildcard. AL Central: Chicago, Kansas City, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Minnesota. The White Sox would have won this division by over 10 games. AL West: Texas, Seattle, California and Oakland. The Rangers and the Mariners would have battled, but again, in this dog pile, finishing at .500 gives you a shot at the playoffs, so who really cares? Besides, due to his injury we wouldnt have gotten to see Nolan Ryan in the playoffs anyway. Results 1993 System: 4 divisions, 4 good races. 1994 System: 6 divisions, 1 good race, 3 races that are close but you dont really care about, and 2 no races.
