Show 2 CLIPPER Friday, September 24, 1993 CollinwoocJ withdraws from Bountiful City Council race By PAUL CHALLIS News Editor Dean BOUNTIFUL Collinwood, a candidate for Bountiful City Council this fall, has withdrawn his name from the race because of a new work assignment at Weber State University. Collinwood made the announcement on Sept. 21 after realizing his new position as Director of Asian Studies at Weber State wouldn't allow him enough time to serve the residents of Bountiful properly. I have just returned from nearly three months in Japan and China on university business, he said. I have therefore decided that I could not adequately serve those I would have been elected to represent; I am, with real regret, withdrawing from the race for City Council. Collinwood ran unsuccessfully last year as a candidate for the state legislature and claims that Bountiful residents approached him to run for election either as mayor or on the council. Bountiful City Recorder Arden Jenson said that it is too late for Collinwoods name to be take off the ballot and he may have to instruct his election judges to scratch his name off by hand for the environment from the dense housing danger of multi-un- it primary election. He may even end up getting a few votes anyway," Jenson added. I intend to remain as active in the political process as time will allow and believe that in the future my workload will again permit me to run for public he said. I am afraid 1 office, would miss too many meetings to do the job justice. Collinwood says that although Bountiful is a wonderful place to live thanks to the efforts of many dedicated women and men over the years, recently a rapid loss of green the space to streets are more congested than ever before, and the hills are marred by pipelines, and we stand dismayed at the mishandling of important contracts such as that of the new Post office. He also charges that some council members whose minority voices have been ignored for years deserve a new set of colleagues who will defend the city as a place of Beautiful Homes and like-mind- Gardens. I believe we must carefully consider who assays to be our city leaders for the future: are they part of the old guard that brought us these problems? Or are they new voices with commitments to natural preserving our ever-prese- projects -- nt commercial and development," Collinwood said. I tender my warmest appreciation to all those who have expressed support for my candidacy. May we all choose wisely in this important city elections. Bountiful residents want new faces on the council and are tired of the same old thing. With Collinwood stepping out of the race for council, only seven candidates remain. Those candidates include: Renee Coon. Douglas R. Davis, Sam Fowler, Jim Huefner, Melvin Pearson, Wayne J. A lot of gang members go to church on Sunday. A police officer who works in gang enforcement said that there were reports of gang signs being used even in the MTC. "It's not only on the west side," he said. There is a real problem of denial from parents, community and churches. Parents are often unaware of their childrens activities. He also said his experience with gang members leads him to feel the kids would like someone to talk to and someone to listen to them. "I don't have time, I just book them," he said and apparently their parents never had any time to talk to them either. When he booked one boy after a recent shooting, the boy said, "I have so much hate" toward the other group. One thing missing from what these kids are being taught is liking people and becoming friends with people, he said.
