Show 'Cats and Vikes off and running in openina cross country meets m By TOM HARALDSEN Woods Cross and Viewmont got off to a good start in their respective region cross country competitions last week, the Wildcats winning a tri-meet over Bountiful and Granite while the powerful Vikes did the same thing against Davis and Weber. In opening week action, Woods Cross boys beat Bountiful and Granite with a low-score of 27. Bountiful was second with 42 and Granite third with 64. Brandon Wilding of Bountiful won the race, but Woods Cross placed Matt Brown in third and Dave Marx in fourth to lead the effort. The Wildcats are now 2-0 on the year. Girls' competition also found the Wildcats a winner, edging Boun- tiful 25-31. Celeste Smith, Jenny j Heap, Heidi Selin, Michelle Devey and Allison Goodrich placed for Woods Cross, now 1-0 on the year. j Granite did not have a complete team. Viewmont's boys team could be the best ever for coach Lynn Dubois, and it got off to a fast start with a 17-47 win over Davis and a 15-50 "shutout" of Weber. Earlier, the Vikes had beaten Bountiful 17-42 17-42 in a dual meet. Leading Viewmont was Tyler Gledhill and Jeremy Call, who tied for first. Scott Keate was third and Jason Hess fourth in the race with Davis. In the Weber dual scoring, the Vikes took the first nine places. The Vikes are 3-0 on the season. Davis won the girls' meet with a 17-42 win over Viewmont, and Weber also beat the Lady Vikes 20-39. 20-39. Davis was led by Sarah Butler in first, Dayna Smith in second and Sandra Verbrokken in third. Viewmont's Windy Hutchings took fourth in the Davis dual, and third against Weber. Regular league competition will continue this week, and several local teams will take part in the Box Elder Invitational in Brigham City on Saturday. A complete look at all four teams will be published in next Tuesday's Clipper, and our annual Davis County Clipper Invitational meet will be held Saturday, September 22 at 8:30 a.m. at Layton City Park. This is the third annual event. Wall also said he was pleased with the way his two quarterbacks r have been playing and indicated that Bountiful will continue to alternate between Lindsey and Beck at the starting quarterback position. The Braves travel to Murray this Friday. |
