Show CRISPY TIMES - JANUARY 1994 - 5 Weather Reporting start with, as it is considered a classic on place, love of place, and man’s CVT would like to report weather conditions and patterns in Castle Valley. Because there is such variation within the Valley, it would be helpful to have at least two people at opposite ends of the valley gathering information. Weather conditions such as temperature (highs and lows), precipitation (we have a gauge for use), when the sun appears (this can vary as much as one and one-half hours based on different locations in the valley), and other factors such as sun, fog, clouds, storms would be useful. If there are some home schoolers who would like to make a project of this, we’d love it. Please let any of the CV staff know if you’re interested. —Joan Sangree VVVvVvVvVvVvV inter-relationship to a place. Authors 2nd Annual such as Ann Zwinger, Barry Lopez, and Ann Walka have all commented on the contribution Richard Nelson’s book has made to their work. Nelson is an anthropologist by training and his experiences with the Alaskan natives have affected his views of nature. He weaves their knowledge and folk wisdom into this book, which is about an island off thecoast of his home in the northwest. Although the geographic setting is a far cry from CV, the lessons he learns have great value anywhere. The author describes the ocean, beaches, forests, streams, and his encounters with animals on land and in the water. As seasons pass, his explorations and adventures on the island bring him to the recognition that he is not an observer of nature on the island but an integral part of it. Be Sweet on Us Because we think there’s not enough love spoken these days, we offer our readers a chance to go public with their sentiments toward friends, family, neighbors, associates. We welcome Valentine’s messages and illustrations from children as well as grown-ups, but they must be in our hands by February 9th to make it into print—our treat. —Cris Coffey VVVQVVVVVUVVV His descriptions of the island and the sea surrounding it are poetic and A Book Review Food for Thought The Island Within As we all like to find a new book and share it with friends and neighbors, the CVT will review each month books chosen for their relationship to our geographical area, the concept of community, and love of place. Sugges— tions, reviews, or loans of books are welcome. Contact Maria Loe at 2597560 in regards to this column. I thought The Island Within by Richard Nelson was a perfect book to informative. This is a book to learn from. It covers topics from botany, oceanography, anthr0pology. and biology. These sciences are beautifully interwoven with psychology, philoso— phy, and thought provoking observations. Many of the animals he encoun‘ ters live in our La Sal Mountains. Nelson does not see man as an inter— loper but shows us how we fit into the intricate puzzle we call the earth. His expressions of love of place, a specific place, mirror our own love of Castle Valley and our redrock world.
