METTEN was born in Fort Bragg, Calif. He Is married to the former Patricia Ilorrl-gaand they are the parents of four children. He received his B.A. degree in theatre arts from UCLA In 1951, his M.A. degree In theatre arts from UCLA in 1953, and his Ph.D. In speech and dramatic arts from the State University of Iowa in 1960. He was a teacher In high school and junior college at Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1952, and he was the director of The Repertory Theatre at Santa Barbara in 1955, He was assistant professor and director of University Theatre at the University of Nevada, Reno In 1959. He joined the faculty at BYU In 1962 and Is now of associate professor dramatic arts. He has worked with The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and The Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City. Since his conversion in 1951, Mr. Metten has served in the church as superintendent of the Sunday School, counselor In two bishoprics, and was recently released as bishop of Edge-moFifth ward in Provo.
