All one needs to either start at Mt. Ogden Park behind the old St. Benedicts Hospital (30th Street) or start over by the tall apartment building at the top of 29th Street. But regardless of which starting point, one should head for two old rusted water tanks which are located near the opening of Waterfall Canyon. One word of caution to all Waterfall canyon hikers is this: Remember that Waterfall Canyon is not a public domain. It is privately owned land (by the Malan Family) and only because of the courtesy of owner are hikers allowed to use it. Thus, be careful not to be destructive or leave any litter around. Otherwise, it could be dosed. Elevation ML Ogden Park is located at an elevation of 4,781 feet and once you reach the old two water tanks, you're past the steepest part in the trail and you are at a 5,000 foot elevation. There are various different routes that can be wed to reach the water tanks, but once you're there, the trail becomes singular and well marked with white arrows painted on various racks throughout the route. During this time of the year, the water runoff ia heavy and it ia virtually Impossible to go up waterfall canyon without getting wet. In several places, one must either cross or travel up stream on rocks for a few yards. There are also several pfarra where one must do a little rock climbing for up to four or five feet In order to keep going. But it's really not that tough. It is rocky, though. The base of the Waterfall la located at an elevation of feet and once you reach thatyou have climbed 1,000 feet since ML Ogden Park. The Waterfall is great to look at and Ogdn City can be 5ta seen well too near the Waterfall. Steep Though some have tinued east through con- a narrow and steep pass beyond the end of Waterfall Canyon and have gone up above the Waterfall even so far as to reach Malans Basin (6,800 foot elevation), such is not advisable. Several people have been killed falling off those cliffs above the waterfall and there are plenty of loose rocks around If one wants to get to Malans Basin, be save and use the Taylor Canyon Trail. Remember too that ita sometimes easier and not as easy to go up an incline as it is to try and safely get back down. Such is the case with traveling up Waterfall Canyons beyond end The hike back down waterfall canyon is easier and quicker. Total time to hike the canyon is about one and a half hours. Some runners have reached the waterfall from Mt. Ogden Park in as little as 14 minutes. But motorcycles and horses would have greet difficulty reaching the waterfall. Waterfall canyon is pretty well a hiking foot trail only.
