Platform Pledges Prohibition In Utah by August 1, 1917, if Democrats Are Successful at Polls, and Favors Nation-wide Prohibition. Ogden, Ttah. Simon Bamberger, of Salt Lake City, was nominated for governor by the Democratic convention conven-tion in session here on August 18. The Progressives were given place on the Democratic ticket, after fusion and anti-fusion advocates had a lively tilt in the convention. The complete ticket follows: For United States serator -William. H. King, Democrat, of Salt Lake. For governor Simbon Bamberger, Democrat, of Salt Lake. For secretary of state Harden Bennion, Democrat, of Vernal. For attorney-general Dan B. Shields, Democrat, of S?.lt Lake. For treasurer David O. Larson, Progressive, of Moroni. For auditor Joseph Ririe, Progressive, Progres-sive, of Ogden. For superintendent of public instruction in-struction E. G. Gowans, non-partisan, of Salt Lake. For justice of the supreme court E. E. Corfman, of Provo. For presidential electors R. N. Bas-kin, Bas-kin, of Salt Lake; Jesse Knight, of Provo; Anthon Anderson, of Logan; John Seaman, of Ogden. For congressman, First district Milton H. Welling, of Fielding. For congressman, Second district James H. Mays, of Salt Lake. The Democratic state platform at great length indorses the administra tion ot President Wilson, approving his course with reference to the war in Europe and in dealings with Mexico Mex-ico and enumerating with approval various legislative enactments relating to the federal reserve banking system, sys-tem, rural credits, injunctions in labor la-bor disputes, highway improvement, federal trade commission, tariff and income tax, national defense, postal service, agricultural department service, ser-vice, immigration, child labor and merchant marine; favors a non-partisan tariff commission, and declares for nation-wide prohibition. On state prohibition the platform says: "We further pledge the Democratic Demo-cratic party and its nominees for governor, gov-ernor, state senators and representatives, representa-tives, if elected, to pass, approve and have in full force and effect, not later than August 1, 1917, an act prohibiting prohibit-ing the manufacture, sale or other disposition dis-position of intoxicating liquors and intoxicating beverages within the state of Utah; to provide severe and summary punishment for violations of the same; and in order that such legislation leg-islation may not be repealed by a subsequent sub-sequent legislature, we pledge our candidates for state senators and representatives rep-resentatives to submit to the people for their vote and approval, at the earliest moment such an election can be held, an amendment to our state constitution which shall forever prohibit pro-hibit the manufacture, sale or other disposition of intoxicating liquors and intoxicating beverages of every kind within the state, and authorizing and directing the legislature to-pass all laws necessary to effectually enforce the same. Other state questions elaborated at great length relate to co-operation with the federal government in road building and the platform further favors fa-vors state and federal legislation for constructing and maintaining reservoirs reser-voirs and irrigation works, the cost to be provided for by long-time bonds. Favors public utilities commission for the state. Promises anti-injunction legislation conforming to provisions of the Clayton Clay-ton federal act, and also anti-trust legislation. Favors legislation to make the Initiative Init-iative and referendum provisions of the state constitution operative. Demands De-mands revision of the state's revenue laws and reduction of expenses. Favors a state department of agriculture, agri-culture, workingmen's compensation law, laws to regulate hazards of work-lngmen, work-lngmen, a non-partisan selection of judicial and school officers. Favors equal suffrage for men and women in every state and appointment of women in positions for which they are adapted. Opposes contract labor. Declares in favor of divorcing public schools from partisan politics. Condemns,the creation of numerous boards, bureaus, commissions and other officials by executive appointment. appoint-ment. Asserts that the Republican party and its leaders are in alliance with the brewers and whisky trust, A plank entitled "Republican Deathbed Death-bed Confes'sion," reads: "We also denounce de-nounce the leaders of the Republican party for their cant and hypocrisy in now pretending to desire prohibition, a public utilities commission, and other legislation much needed and demanded demand-ed by the people, as a deathbed profession pro-fession not worthy of even being : called 'repentance'."
