Show PINE VALLEY DEER HERD IS BEING STUDIED Division of Wildlife Resources Re-sources biologists are currently cur-rently studying the Pine Valley Val-ley deer herd m'rration patterns pat-terns in the Snowfield and Pintura areas of Southern Utah. The project is an effort to better understand under-stand the relationship .between .be-tween summer and winter range and will enable wildlife wild-life officials to manage local deer populations more effectively. ef-fectively. Alfalfa an apple mash are used to attract and concentrate concen-trate deer under a net which is then dropped over them, capturing up to a dozen deer at one time. Immediately, officials are busy attaching attach-ing collars and ear tags, recording re-cording biological data and releasing the deer to avoid any undue stress. Deer are marked with brightly colored collars, enabling en-abling them to be identified when observed later by sportsmen and biologists. To date, approximately 30 deer have been marked and released with blue collars. Data collected by monitoring monitor-ing this particular area will be used by biologists to assist as-sist in setting' hunting seasons, sea-sons, to help alleviate agricultural ag-ricultural damages and to predict effects of possible future developments on the deer herd. |
