Show zioi mm 15 in OF FIM1TE Its Natural Sculptures and Gorgeous Colorings Form Matchless Picture. The opening of a new Y osemite wo old , be an event of considerable importance under any circumstances, but when a new vacationiand comes to us heraided 1 by government authorities as surpassing: that: "most beautiful valley in the world," it is time for the traveling public pub-lic to g-et out its guide books and prepare pre-pare to march. And this is precisely the description that we get of Zion canyon in southern Utah, which has Just been taken into the family of national parks as the Zion National monument. In the August issue of MoToR, the Na-! Na-! tional Magazine of Motoring, Horace M. Albright, assistant director of the national na-tional park service, describes Zion canyon can-yon as combining the magnificent natural sculpture of the Tosemite, with a riot o color that rivals the hues of an autumnal sunset. 'Thts wonderful canyon of Zion was first discovered and named by Mormon Mor-mon pioneers In the late '50s," writes Mr. AJbright. "These men were profoundly impressed with the beauty and symmetry of the great domes and spires of the canyon can-yon walLs and by the gorgeous coJoring of the whole sublime picture." C. K. Button, who visited the canyon in 132. wrote: "In its proportions it is about, renal to Yosemite, but in the nobility no-bility and beauty of its sculptures there , is no comparison. It is Hyperion to a satyr. No wonder the fierce Mormon zt-iUot who named it was reminded of tho Great Zion on which his fervid thouehts were bent, of houses not built with hands, eternal in the heavens." It was a happy chance that loft the naming of tho various sculptures in the canyon to the zealots of the Mormon church, for none hut tho tremendous imagery of the Old Testament could do justice to these stupendous creations of nature. Thus we have the east and west Temples of the Virgin, the Altar of Sacrifice, tho Great White Throne, tho Guardian Ansrels, the Gates of Zion, the Pass and Court of the Patriarchs; it Is all sonorously inspiring i and in keeping with the primeval grandeur gran-deur of this land of majestic loveliness. Within the past year the state of Utah has completed an excellent motor road from Salt Lake City to Zion canyon, a distance of somewhat over 300 miles. The government authorities have built a good road through the canyon. The Salt Take Route railway has a station at Lund, whence motor stages carry visitors to the canyon, so that transportation difficul-t'e7 difficul-t'e7 have now been completely " removed. Within tile reservation, on the valley's floor, there is a permanent camp, which provides comfortable accommodation for visitors. Incidentally, September is perhaps per-haps the finest time of all the year in Zion. |
