Now that his playing career is finished, he plans to pursue a college coaching career. "My main plan is I'd like to stay in the college game and coach," said Nelson. The two professions of a college coach/teacher are rarely intertwined in this day and age. One exception, whom many recognize, is UVSC head coach and local resident Steve Gardner. He has taught health and PE for many years while being a head baseball coach. But we are in the 21st century where change is as certain as the rising of the sun. "It's sort of a dying breed," said Nelson. "There's not many college coaches anymore who do both." Nelson finished his teaching degree in PE and' said he,would look for a job if he doesn't land a college coaching job. He talked about his experience as a grad assistant and mentioned a couple of things he's learned on the way to becoming a good coach. "You've got to be consistent with what you want done," he said. "You've got to be able to communicate with coaches and players with what needs to be done." Nelson also said that having good talent makes a big difference as a college coach. "It's always nice to have good players around," he said. This past spring at UVSC, Nelson could be seen regularly as the first base coach. As a grad assistant, he didn't experience a lot of stress in his first coaching experience. "It's all in the head coach's hands," Nelson said. With respect to his playing career, Nelson explained why he believes his experience as a player can serve him as a coach. "I've had an opportunity to play for many coaches who've done some good things," he said. "I've picked up stuff I can use and things I shouldn't use. I've played for coaches who did things that I wouldn't do. That's one way my playing experience has really helped me out — how to handle certain situations." Among the many reasons former players go into coaching, Nelson said his main motivation is to stay close to the game. "That's one reason why I chose it, because it still keeps you in the ball game," said Nelson. "Being around the game everyday, you're with a bunch of kids who want to play, and you can also keep your competitive edge. Just the mentality is what I like." He also talked about the transition and what it's been like for him to have recently played in college. "Right now it's hard because I feel like I could play and perform better than some of the players I coach," said Nelson. "It's still an adjustment that I'm getting used to, but I love it. I don't have the pressure on me to go out there and perform, even though I loved the pressure." He also mentioned that as a coach he doesn't have to put in the extra time to be a better player. But anyone who really knows Gub understands that putting in extra time as a player meant almost all his time. If he can successfully transfer his work ethic from player to coach, then you can bet on seeing him in this craft for a long time.
