Chad Vest Back in the late eighties and early nineties. Coach Shoe's players grew fond of two young Nelson boys named Casey and Tyler. Each of them were an integral part of the SF baseball program as they appeared on game day, decked out in full uniform, ready to have fun, as both were eager to see their childhood heroes get the win. Casey, aka "Gub," was only four years old when he began bat-boy duties with his older brother. Former players recall Gub — a nickname he received from calling legendary Cubs broadcaster Harry Carry "The Gub Man" — roaming back and forth with a mitt in one hand and a ball in the other. During games, players were • entertained as they would listen to Gub call out their name. With such a tiny yet sincere voice, he cheered them on to success. Dressed in a mini SF uniform, with white pants, jersey, red socks, cleats and an SF cap, he was ready to take the field even back then. It was evident to all that this young boy had an enormous love for the game, even at an early age. Nelson finished out his college career at BYU in May 2006. While there, the Cougars benefited from his beautiful sweet stroke. He consistently put the ball in play and was effective at hitting balls to all parts of the field, especially the right side. He demonstrated so(id power as he ripped 18 doubles and five homers, including one against Oregon St. who won the CWS in back to back years. Nelson amassed a total of 87 hits in as many games in a two-year period for the Cougars. On defense, he was stellar behind the plate. He blocked many pitches in the dirt and gunned down numerous runners who dared to test his arm.
