At the clos of business tonight the pacific Kxpre company will turn over it entire system In the west to tho American Express company nnd will open up temporarily fitted oilices in the new Mclntyro bnllding. The coming of tho Amrlcan Express Ex-press company will mean the establishment estab-lishment of a through npre?s system sys-tem between Now York, Chicago and other business centers to Salt lako City and Ogden and other point In I'tah and Colorado. It will Mio mean rho ultimate change of tho express service throughout the west and the bringing of Salt Lsko In cl-er touch with the rest of the con.ierc!al world. The change means that tho new company will assume charge of tho Cexpress business on the Oregon Short J-Ino, the Oregon Railway and Navigation Naviga-tion company and most of the subsld-ary subsld-ary lines. The company will take over the business of the Wells. Fargo & Co. on the Oregon & Washington railway May l. This will Include the taking over of twenty-four imjiortant points In th PiiRet Sound district. Including Seattle and Tacoma. A direct line will he cstabllxhed at that point between be-tween New York aud Seattle. Through Service Coming. The new compony will take over the buwlnesa uf Wells. Fargo & Co. on the Salt Ijke Route. September 1, and will establish a through express serv-. serv-. ice betwoon New York and Ios Ange-i Ange-i les. At tbo same time the American i company will take up the Las Vegas ' & Tonopah service, Tho American j company will then control tho business on all the lines In and out of Salt Iake excoptlng the Denver L Rio Grande, which Is handled by Wells, Fargo & Co. The new through service will It is expected be a great factor to bnsl-ness bnsl-ness In Salt I-ake City, as It will make It possible for merchants to get thel express packages from New York, Chicago Chi-cago and all other commercial centers with much greater dispatch nnd In bet-I bet-I ter condition. No transfer of the pack-j pack-j ages will be necessary. The car will i rnn direct from New York City to Salt ' Jjako City and t Ogden making It unnecessary to make transfers until tho destination is reached. Another car will go to IKnver. In the future I the name service will be adopted for f J)8 Angeles and Seattle and Inter-' Inter-' mediate points. 1 To Run Express Trains. Tn the immediate future one of th- '. American Express trains now running J out of New York will go west is far I as Green River. Tills will be made up exclusively of express cars. At a later dat this train will be extended on to the coast and will handle th? through cars. It Is expected that one r.f these trains will leavo New York dally tbo samo as those now running Into the Now England states and olh-?r parts of the country from New York. G. C. Taylor, who will manage all lines wret of the Missouri and Mississippi Miss-issippi rlvera, stated this morning that his diatrkt will bo known as the Faclfic district nnd will bo managed from tho offices on tho ninth floor of tho Boston bnllding. Important Station Here. J. W. Rogers, heretofore with the rnciflc Express company, will assume tho samo duties with the American company, superintending with W. C. Morgan the whole of the Rocky mountain moun-tain division, including tho company's lines and offices west of Ogden and Salt Lake. Hla office will bo In the McCornick block. J. A. Sanborn agent of the raclflc Express company, will assume tho dntHs with the new company com-pany of general agent. In connection with the business Salt Iiko will bo made a depository for the remittance of districts for considerable consid-erable distance about the city. The new offices will be nttd up In elegant style after May 1R. Temporary quarters have been fitted up until that time. Important Schedule. Mr. Taylor stated this morning that the company will attempt to Improve the express servico greatly, in this part of the country. Our object will be to handle express quickly and carefully, care-fully, eliminating discouraging delays in tranelt," he gald "I believe, of course, that It will mean a great dal to tho business men of tho city." Just what the Intention of the Pacific Pa-cific Express company are is a matter of much conjecture. It is stated unofficially un-officially that the company will continue con-tinue to maintain offices in Salt Lake City. The report has been circulated that the company is figuring on securing secur-ing the Western Faclfic line, whn it is opened and conducting business with the coast cities. As to the working forces of the Faclfic Fa-clfic Express company, Mr. Taylor stated this morning that there would he but few changes. "Virtually all of the clerks and other employees of the Pacific company will be taken into our service." |
