Show How to Burn Gas Coke In order to use gas cokf, kindle the fire in usual way, and when burning fairly, fill fire box with a deep, even bed of coke. Owing to its peculiar fracture and rough grain it does not pack as closely as hard coal, and leaves more air space, retaining its original shape until burned to ash. Keep a large body of coke under un-der a low fire rather than a little coke under a strong fire. To keep a low fire, close draft In lower part of the front of furnace, keep slide in feed door open and damper in chimney pipe almost closed. The damper, with which the fire can be regulated perfectly, should be opened only when kindling a new fire, and when coke is well Ignited the draft should be shut off. Keep a layer of ashes on the grate, and when shaking stop before hot coals appear. This helps to keep the fire burning slowly. When leaving fire for the night fill fire box full of coke, shut off damper and throw on pea coke to fill up open spaces, keeping feed door ajar, and leave bed of ashes on grate to check draft. Ashes should not be permitted to pile up below the grate so as to touch it. A furnace that heats poorly with coal on account of poor draft, will do much better bet-ter with gas coke, which requires only an ordinary draft.
