Show Fire Drills Held Wednesday At Local Schools Fire drills conducted Wednesday, Wednes-day, Dec. 7, at the Roosevelt high and elementary schools showed an inadequacy of fire-fighting fire-fighting equipment, according to Fire Chief Carl Hacking. He suggested the installation of at least three C02 guns in both schools, to replace the instruments now in use. Only one worn-out fire gun was available in the elementary school, Hacking said, and the extinguishers at Roosevelt high are antiquated, war - surplus equipment. Hacking said the fire department depart-ment and teachers cleared Roosevelt Roos-evelt high of students in slight-! slight-! ly less, and the elementary school in a little more than, two minutes. The fire chief expressed ap-jpreciation ap-jpreciation for the cooperation of teachers and students during the drills. He said the drills were orderly and successful in both schools. The teachers succeeded suc-ceeded in getting the students through the halls with a minimum mini-mum of difficulty, and out a safe distance from the buildings. Hacking mentioned that it would be a good idea if fire escapes could be installed on both buildings. Roosevelt high is especially vulnerable to fire damage, as the stairs from the third and second floors wind down from the center of the building'. If fire ever engulfed these stairs, students on the upper two floors could be trapped. |
