IT'S TIME TO ABOLISH THE DEATH PENALTY-IT'S A VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS. FurnGulh A fairy tale with a conscience By Gari Manning Staff writer of the Signpost FernGully is not a traditional "G"-rntcd, cartoon fairy tale. It is a new look at the old issue of saving an endangered species. ..the rain forests. This new movie by Bill Croyer and Jim Crox is based on the stories of FernGully by Diana Young. It tells the story of the fairies who live in the trees of FernGully, a rain forest where humans are mythological creatures and leaches and iguanas can sing in harmony. Crysta (the voice of Samantha Mathis), is a pretty, young fairy who looks rather reminiscent of Disney's Ariel, from The Little Mermaid. She is studying the magic of creation from the local wise-woman, Magi Lune (Grace Zabriski). During her studies, Magi Lune tells Crysta of Hexxus (Tim Curry), the evil creature who once killed off many rain forests and fairies. He also chased the humans away. It was through the magic of Magi Lune that Hexxus was imprisoned in a tree and thus stopped forgood. That is, unless he is somehow given the poisonous toxins from which he feeds; but where would he get such toxins in a lush, green and healthy rain forest? Enter the humans! As is typically depicted of our species, mankind joins this tender tree-prizing picture chopping down trees left and right. Coincidentally, this includes the one that Hexxus has been trapped in. The big machinery which ravishes the lush foliage just happens to spew the poisonous toxins that Hexxus loves, and he is rejuvenated. As Crysta and her fairy friend, Pips (Christian Slater), streak through the underbrush with a small, brawny group of beetles and bugs, they meet Batty Koda (Robin Williams), an insane bat who has escaped from the human's laboratories where everything from cosmetics to electrical equipment was tested on him. Batty revives rumors circulating about humans, as well as Crista's curiosity about them. After flying off to investigate the 'mysterious' cloud of smoke (caused by man's machinery), she meets her first real human who she. accidentally shrinks despite her best intentions. FurnGully teaches a valuable ecological lesson while providing great entertainment. It frequently reinforces the wise words of Magi Lune "All the magic of creation exists within a single tiny seed," and "Help it grow." It also addresses the concept of a tree's feelings when Crysta asks, "Can you feel its pain?" The music of FernGully is lively and upbeat. The "Batty Rap," performed by Robin Williams was a Tioot' (or more appropriately for Batty, "ascream"). Thethemesong, Some Other World, is performed by Elton John and as is typical of his music, it is both well arranged and well performed. FernGully is a charming and delightful movie which addresses a pretty hot issue- the second movie this season about mankinds destruction of the rain forests. It is dedicated "to our children and our children's children." So see the movie, enjoy it and in the sage words of FernGully' s advertisers, "Plant the sppd" |
