Show i 22 Vernal Itfmt Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1990 Lady Utes take region tennis match against Lady Dinos The Lady Utcs tennis team became be-came the first girl's tennis team in the season opener in a close 3-2 decision de-cision over the lady Dinos of Carbon. The match boiled down to the second sec-ond doubles as the Utes took first and second singles and the' Dinos won third singles and first doubles. The tie breaker occurred in second doubles where Rachacl Erskine and Lori Mansfield provided a straight sets win in their opener, a region win, and the win period in two or :three years in the sport. : Joining Erskine and Mansfield in ;the winner's circle were first singles player Tanya Law who swept her opponent in a straight sets win of 6-4 6-4 and 6-0. At second singles, Christina Murphy needed three sets to win and provide Uintah with the match winner. Murphy won the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The lady Dinos drew blood at the third singles, where Amy Williams of Uintah lost 4-6 and 0-6; at first doubles Analeis Calder and Krish Wilcken lost 3-6 and 1-6. Coach Eric Pye pointed to the second sec-ond singles match as the pivotal point of the win. Focus center court: Christina Murphy was the lone match still in progress with the team score still knotted at 2 each. Murphy had won the first set and lost the second; the team win rested on the second singles outcome. Murphy fell behind 2-4 in the third set, but the fan and team support she received from the Uintah side inspired in-spired her to come back. She took the final 4 games to win 6-4. "The win at second singles is a major moral and team victory for the girls," said Coach Pye in commenting com-menting on the first in a long time win by the Lady Utes, "Just as the Shane Bullock win over Carbon two years ago, turned around the fortunes for-tunes of the program around and acted as a catalyst for the current success, this win promises to do the same for the girls. It was a great individual in-dividual effort by Christina and a great team win." The Utes won the match 3-2 and now look to Lehi for their second region match on a high note. The 1-0 1-0 Utes are riding on a high note in a program which appears to be headed head-ed for the success the boy's tennis team has achieved in the past two or three years. At the same time, Agassi was pouring the coals over Boris Becker for a convincing win. In both cases the young men made it look easy, especially Sampras who opened against Lendel and won two straight sets, including the pivotal match in the second set, which won in a tie-breaker winning five points on serve including three aces. It was Lenders earliest U.S. Open exit ever. The young American became the youngest player, at age 19 years, 28 days old, ever to win the men's championship, eclipsing a 100-year mark when the open was won by Oliver Campbell at age 19 years, six months and nine days in 1890. He needed only one hour and 42 minutes to become the 1990 champion cham-pion and claim the $350,000 first prize. Against Agassi the young Californian served up 13 aces, giving giv-ing him an amazing 100 even for the championship. Utah and BYU share WAC spotlight this week, Ags sweep Big West Ty Dctmer, whose performance against Miami should vault him into the Hcisman Trophy lead, was given no great surprise this week with the outstanding offensive player of the week award for the Western Athletic Conference. Instead, it seems like just a nice afterthought. Dctmer, who led the Cougars to the upset of the year in a great performance perfor-mance completing a record number of passes against a Miami defense, was given the nod Monday for the weekly award. Joining him in the spotlight was Utah's linebacker, Anthony Davis, who was a leader in the fantastic finish which gave the Utcs the win in the closing second of the contest from what appeared to be a sure Minnesota game win chip shot field goal. The Utes won and Davis was given giv-en the WAC nod for his performance perfor-mance which included 14 tackles (8 unassisted), a fumble recovery and an intercepted pass. Meanwhile, the Utah Slate Aggies swept the weekly honors in the Big West when halfback Roger Grant was named offensive player of the week in the conference and tackle RobVanDcpol earned the conference confer-ence nod as the best defensive player play-er of the w eek. Grant shattered USU rushing record when he gained 292 yards on 34 carries to eclipse the old mark of 252 yards by Rick Parros in 1978. VanDcPnI led the Apgic Defense with 15 tackles which included two sacks. The Utes, who ran a 5K course nestled in the Yellow Hills, saw great performances from Dennis Anderson, Jason Foresgren, Jody Fountaine and Amy Hall to take a clean sweep in the top 2 places of each division. Dennis Anderson won the boys division di-vision with a time of 18 minutes and 29 seconds (18:29) and Jody Fountaine took the girls division with a time of 21:33. In second were Jason Forsgren, who completed complet-ed the 5K in 19:13, and Amy Hall reached the finish line in 25:09. Rangely had to settle for a top finish fin-ish of third in both divisions. The leading boy's runner was Mike Haney, who finished in the 19:30, a full 17 seconds behind Forsgren and one minute and one second behind Anderson. Mary Allred of the Panthers was the highest Rangely girl finisher when she crossed the line in 28:33 a full seven minutes behind Fountaine. In fourth place was Ian McDavid (19:50) of Rangely and Jenifer Hall of Uintah who finished at 29:45. Wayne Holt of Uintah took fifth with a time of 20:03 and there was no girls fifth place, as neither fielded field-ed enough girls for that place. The Utes started their year out right with the win before beginning region action and become the fourth straight Uintah team to win their season open of the five sports being played in fall competition. Let's 30 to the mom! Men at Work Sometimes hilarious comedy of errors from writer-director-star Emilio Estevez ("Wisdom"). Emilio and real-life bro Charlie Sheen ("Platoon," "Wall Street") are West LA. garbage men innocently involved in-volved with crooks who dump toxic waste in the bay and murder a politician who threatens to squeal. Strong PG-13: Very strong language; lan-guage; sex references, vulgarity. 97 . minutes. Darkman Scientist Liam Neeson ("Suspect," "Good Mother") is disfigured when crooks blow up his lab, and returns to haunt them with disguises made from the artificial skin he invented. Served up in corny B-movie styling, this vengeflick is the most idiotically unbelievable movie we've seen in a decade. The logical and staging inconsistencies are so ludicrous and totally unconvincing they drove us looney! (Oh, does it show?) Story and direction by Sam Raimi ("Evil Dead").
